Hotel Del Coronado Coronado (San Diego), California Rising from water's edge on the quaint Island of Coronado in San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado is considered one of America's most beautiful resorts.   A classic historic hotel, The Del was built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Today, The Del offers travelers every contemporary convenience in an enchanting Victorian atmosphere. It is a combination that moved USA Today to call the The Del "one of the top ten resorts in the world." Begun in March 1887 and open for business February 1888, this enormous timber structure, rising from the Coronado Peninsula like a castle, was one of the last of the extravagantly conceived resort hotels in Southern California. It was the first hotel in the world, and the largest building outside of New York City, to use electric lighting; the lighting system was installed under the direct supervision of Thomas A. Edison.
The Mission Hotel & Spa Riverside, California Extracted from the National Register of Historic Places:  "From its beginnings in 1876 as the Glenwood Cottage, this building has been enlarged and embellished over the years until today it is the largest Mission Revival building in California. The Mission Inn contains a hotel, shops, and a chapel centered around an open patio; its furnishings include pieces from the Orient, Mexico and Europe, as well as Tiffany windows."  Today, guests spend the day at Kelly's Spa, playing golf or touring the Temecula Valley wine country.

Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center Hotel Baton Rouge, Louisiana The Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center Hotel was once known as the Heidelberg Hotel.  Extracted from the National Register of Historic Places:    "The storied Heidelberg Hotel was once the favorite haunt of legendary politician Huey Long, “the Kingfish.” Construction on the Heidelberg Hotel began in 1927, with just a sketch on a napkin. Architect Edward Nield worked with his vision but without any formal plans to create a luxury hotel fit for Louisiana's capital city. In 1928, Huey P. Long was elected governor, establishing himself as one of the state's most colorful characters. After more than $70 million in renovations, the former Heidelberg Hotel has been reborn as the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center Hotel. Modern upgrades, tasteful amenities, and a full-service spa and exercise facility have brought new life to the hotel. Guests can even dine in Long's infamous secret tunnel."

The Grove Park Inn Asheville, North Carolina Extracted from the National Register of Historic Places:   "The Grove Park Inn, built by Edwin Wiley Grove, is remarkable because an amateur architect designed it during an era of architectural pretension. Grove, owner of a pharmaceutical company manufacturing Bromo-Quinine, arrived in Asheville in 1900 and found the mild climate so much to his liking that he purchased a large tract of land on Sunset Mountain. Grove had the idea for a magnificent lodge, grand enough to mirror the majesty of the mountains that would provide its foundation. Grove's concept called for a building with the natural rough stone of the mountains surrounding the lodge. After finding that no local architects could grasp his concept, Grove entrusted his son-in-law, Fred L. Seely, to design the building. Seely had no formal training in architecture but undertook the project as both designer and contractor. The Grove Park Inn was completed in 11 months and 27 days and opened on July 1, 1913. "
