History

The Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort – A Piece of Living History. Hacienda Del Sol Ranch School for girls was opened in 1929 by John and Helen Murphey to offer an exotic Western getaway while shaping the minds of girls from across the country. One of several boarding schools of this kind in the area, The Hacienda Del Sol Girls School roster listed the names of some of the country’s most elite families: Vanderbilt, Pillsbury and Westinghouse. The school closed in 1942 during the economic strain of World War II.   In 1944, Hacienda Del Sol was converted into a guest ranch that immediately attracted the Silver Screen’s most notable stars, among them John Wayne and Clark Gable. Legend has it that Hacienda’s Casita Grande was the favorite hideaway of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Professional baseball players Lou Boudreau, Hank Greenberg and well known golfers, Sam Snead, Horton Smith, John Bulla and Don January enjoyed the ranch in the 1940’s.

Today guests can enjoy a glimpse of times past through photos throughout the resort and visiting or staying in the Historic rooms that once served as student dorms. While walking the grounds guests may find themselves drawn to the principal’s office which not houses the unique offerings of our gift shop.

Enjoyed a Spa day here ONLY, so can't review rooms, etc. The spa day was about $300 dollars for a facial, massage, and a $25 discount on food an alcohol and access to the pools. I've definitely been to some spas with more amenities (in Europe), but for the US, of those I've been to, this spa was quite nice. What I enjoyed most was the service -- which was impeccable. Friendly staff made me feel at home. The pools had a poolside bar and food service. Not as much shade as one would like, given the incredible sun and heat in Tucson, but for a relaxing day, still worth it. The cost included taxes and tip.

Beautiful property, comfortable rooms (we stayed in casita with terrace and car port - it’s like a small house, with kitchen, lots of room), great views. The restaurant was very nice, food was great, and waiters very nice and helpful.

The spa deserves a special note - both my husband and I had a massage by Vicky, and it was one of the best we have had in a long time. She is great at deep tissue massage, listens to your needs and does exactly what you ask for.

We will be back, already made a reservation!

Absolutely wonderful experience and stay! My husband and I booked a room and couple massages for our anniversary. Upon arrival the staff were very kind and upgraded us to the Catalina King Room! They also gave us a free breakfast voucher for the morning of our anniversary. The room was absolutely beautiful and on the nightstand welcoming us was a card with a small edible gift. The pools were clean. One accessible 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, the firepit was not in service at the time of our stay, which was something we had really looked forward to. The overall experience made up for that! The couples massages were very relaxing and professional. Over all, The breakfast selections are impressive, delicious, and very high quality. Our waiter was so nice and insisted he did not want his tip because it was our anniversary. Lastly, the valet took us down to see the horses. Great place to stay! I give this resort 5 out of 5 stars. If I could give more stars I would!
