Abingdon is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a designated Virginia Historic Landmark.  It is believed to have been named for Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England -- the ancestral home of Martha Washington.

This Inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1832 as a private residence by a Virginia General. From private residence it evolved into a finishing school for young ladies, later served served as a hospital for wounded Civil War soldiers, and later still became a women’s college.

Today, the Inn is an elegant hotel and spa, and pays homage to its gracious Southern roots and enduring historic legacy.
