The San Francisco Bay Area, known as the Bay Area or simply the Bay, is a metropolitan region in Northern California. The region includes large cities including San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, along with smaller urban areas. The Bay area consists of nine counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.

Alameda is located on a small island of the same name, near Oakland.

Berkeley is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, Northern California. Its neighbors to the south are the cities of Oakland and Emeryville. To the north is the city of Albany and the  community of Kensington. The eastern city limits coincide with the county line (bordering Contra Costa County) which generally follows the ridgeline of the Berkeley Hills.
