Atouch Spa, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia I have visited Atouch Spa several times. Although I could consider the spa
as a 3 star class of spa, the environment and professional therapists make
me see them as a 5 star spa. I've already tried many of their variety type
of massages and rituals that they offer. The prices, cleanliness and the marvelous
experiences that I have had keep me coming back. If anyone out there plans
to visit KL Malaysia do drop by and try out this spa. -- Zach

Eganridge Inn & Spa, Fenlon Falls,
Ontario, Canada Last summer, I attended Egan Ridge with some of my closest friends (a
bride and bridesmaids), and was blown away by the experience. I saw
some nice pictures online, and was impressed by the list of services offered.
We decided it looked like a great place to spend the day to relax with our
excited and nervous bride-to-be. We relaxed by a plunge pool before
each of us had a spa treatment. We were offered cold beverages and were
able to slip out to enjoy a wonderful lunch on a cute patio in Bobcaygon.
We were all impressed with the facility and the aesthetician, and would highly
recommend it to anyone. We celebrated a new phase of a friend's life
and will always have that in our memories.
Elemental Embrace, Brighten,
Ontario, Canada I tried this new day/stay spa as they were having a special promotion for
April/May and the prices were good. The package was "all-inclusive" and breakfast,
lunch and dinner came with the price. My husband and I stayed there one night.
We both had Swedish massages and I had a pedicure. There are a number of really
good features about this spa: the staff are nice, the treatments were professional
and as good as any spa treatment I've had elsewhere. The spa itself is in
a beautiful wooded area. The spa is spacious, not crowded, quiet, serene and
welcoming. It has a nice gym and the rooms are spacious, with balconies or
patios and ensuite bathrooms. There is a sauna, pool, whirlpool. There are
2 lounge areas and a nice dining room. Some negative comments: The spa
area itself wasn't as clean as it should be -- the floors and rugs were
dirty. The bed in our room was so hard, I didn't sleep well. The food
didn't have as much variety as advertised on the website, was a set menu
(no options available), often repetitive (curried chick peas more than
once per day), and, served in such small quantities that my husband and I
were hungry all the time. The spa location is isolated, so leaving
to eat a meal off site isn't an option. There were no snacks available
between meals. Restaurants in the area do not deliver. The spa has a
visiting chef who comes in a few hours to prepare meals twice per day.
If you are not available at meal time, dining later isn't an option.
For a residential facility this is unacceptable. They need a full-time
kitchen person. If you are looking to lose weight, the small
quantities will work, but if you are not, you will be hungry. As a result,
I would go back for day treatments only, and bring my own food in a brown
bag so I would not go hungry. -- Anonymous by Request
Ste. Anne's Country Inn & Spa, Grafton, Ontario,
Canada I spent a most memorable time at Ste Anne's Country Inn & Spa this past weekend
with my sister. She suffers from lupus, and also has career stress which worsens
her health. I brought her to the spa hopeful that it would help her
unwind and also slow the progress of the disease. When I picked her up from
her new and stressful job, she was tied up in a million knots. As I watched
her throughout the weekend, I could see the stress melt away with each treatment
from the caring and skilled staff. I am so grateful for the kind, courteous
and skilled service. The accommodations, food, treatments and the atmosphere
did more for her in this one weekend than a month-long vacation could have
done. As we were driving home on Sunday, she began to cry, saying that
she had never felt more relaxed, pampered, and serene. We will be going
back and recommending it to all our friends. -- T.B.
Ste. Anne's Country Inn & Spa, Grafton, Ontario,
Canada Ste. Anne's was my first spa getaway,
and it was everything I expected it to be. From the moment my sister-in-law
and I arrived, we both noticed the warm and inviting atmosphere, which was
likely a combination of the subtle but ever-present aromatherapy that lingers
in the air, the soothing music playing quietly in the background and the pleasant
and friendly staff that greeted us with a welcoming smile and referring to
us by our first names, instantly making us feel comfortable and like we belonged
there. They have their own bottled water which is available at no cost anytime
from the fridge. The mud bathe there was the coolest thing. It gives you this
amazing feeling of weightlessness, since you are suspended in the thick solution,
not touching the bottom or anything, so there's no pressure on any part of
your body. The woman who was helping with the mud bath treatment (and believe
me, you need help! Getting out of that tub while you're covered with 50-100
pounds of mud is no easy task!) said that she once heard the sensation described
as how perhaps a baby must feel while still in the womb - warm, relaxed, safe,
floating. It was quite a powerful image, and soothing at the same time. The
steam room is scented with eucalyptus aromatherapy, so when you get out you
feel invigorated and stimulated, rather than lethargic. They have a wonderful
waiting room which has many windows so there is a lot of natural light, where
you can read, drink herbal teas, or even have a nap between treatments. This
was my first and best spa experience to date, and every year I check out a
new place, and compare it to this one. The food here is incredible, the service
impeccable, and the treatments all exceeded my expectations (little things
like getting to take home the "dry brush" used for your body treatments).
There isn't one thing I would have changed - except maybe next time stay for
an extra day! I would, and have, recommend it highly to anyone interested
in a relaxing spa getaway. -- V.A.
Elizabeth Milan Spa, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada I went to the Elizabeth Milan Spa this year for my annual spa getaway.
The treatments were not what I expected, although still enjoyable. I went
with all of their chocolate services (Chocolate Body Indulgence, Chocolate
Martini Manicure, Chocolate Truffle Foot Treatment) as I am a true chocoholic,
so how could I resist? Although there was nothing specifically misleading
or untrue about the information the spa sent me, I felt they should have indicated
that these treatments were done with white chocolate. White chocolate just
doesn't have that cocoa smell that milk chocolate or dark chocolate has, so,
I stress again, it wasn't bad, it was simply not what I was expecting. I was
a little frustrated when I first got there, as I was directed to change into
my robe and slippers (which were provided, by the way, and that's always a
nice treat) in the change room. When I was done that, the receptionist/hostess
who had directed me there was gone, and I was all by myself, not knowing where
I should be. Since I hadn't been shown around, my only alternative seemed
to be to go back into the waiting room where I sat when I first arrived, which
wouldn't have been such a bad thing, except for the fact that I was in my
robe and slippers (and nothing else) and the waiting room is right in front
of the entrance to the spa, which is lined with windows, looking out into
the underground mall where it is located! While I'm sure that the other passersby
didn't give me a second glance, it certainly made me feel uncomfortable (and
not at all relaxed) to have shoppers milling about while I was wearing next
to nothing in plain view of them. I finally saw someone through a doorway
in the hair salon section of the spa, and asked them if there was somewhere
else I could wait for my treatment, and they advised me to "go around the
corner to your left" as they carried on with what they were doing. I'm sure
they were all busy (it was a Saturday, from what I can recall) but I went
on a spa getaway to feel pampered and doted on for a change, and instead I
felt like I was forgotten about. The spa was very clean and well kept, and
the staff all seemed quite happy, which is nice to see (I would feel guilty
enjoying myself if the staff were tired or obviously overworked). The woman
who did my pedicure was so pleasant and friendly, and this was truly the best
part of my spa experience. -- V.A., August 2004

L'Aqualigne
Spa at Pelican Bay Resort, Simpson Bay, St. Marten To be honest this was the worst spa experience I have had. I have
been lucky to have 100 plus spa treatments in my life and I have never
been so disgusted. I received a medical pedicure from L'Aqualigne. First
of all, most importantly, the tools used we filthy, dirty and some
seemed to be rusty. The entire facility, except the waiting room of
course, appeared dirty. The service itself was not worth it because I
truly did not know what was "medical" about it and in turn much more
expensive. I brought up my concerns with the manager who did nothing to
fix the situation. I don't know how this spa passed any sort of
inspection. Katie, 2007

El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa,
Puerto Rico. The Golden Door Spa was classy, the personnel were
professional. I had a wonderful stress reduction massage
and a facial (my first ever). The prices were above
average, but consistent with pricing of items on the
island. I enjoyed the waterfall Jacuzzi tub. What
a blast to stand nude under a hot waterfall, definitely
my favorite feature. A nice reception area,
quality atmosphere, with a sitting area with many herbal
tea selections. There was jazzercise downstairs,
although the workout equipment was limited. -- Mark D.
El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa,
Puerto Rico. The staff was magnificent, and the aroma in the air just
blissful. Don't miss out on the aroma-therapy massage

Don't forget to stop at the shop on the way out and
stock up on their eucalyptus products, you'll appreciate

medicine, my sinuses have never been so clear!" --

Wellness Živa, Bled,
Slovenia
As an antidote to the cold in Slovenia in March I thought a Spa Day
would be a good idea, and it was. As these were said to be specialties of
the centre, I booked in for the Živa Package, containing a body treatment
and a facial. Each of them were to last 90 minutes. The body treatment
started with a scrub, where one could choose between lemon and orange,
followed by a long and lovely massage. The facial was truly out of this
world, especially the elaborate face massage and the hand massage after
application of mask. Only a few points that the management should take
into consideration: communicate with the customer as the programme is not
as in the brochure. Having lived in Egypt for some years, I found it odd
having a man as a masseur, also without previous communication. And last
but not least: loose the paper panties and slippers. They're cheap and
uncomfortable. -- Bianca F., 2008
Hillside Su Hotel,
Antalya, Turkey I enjoyed the quiet and cleanliness of the Hillside Su Spa. The
Turkish culture is not chattery with "thank you's" and "can I help you"
being asked all the time. I was just left alone in the Turkish Bath
atmosphere. I will definitely visit again. -- Semra B.

After the Rain, Geneva,
Switzerland Several of us who are regular spa visitors took the opportunity to enjoy the
services at After the Rain in downtown Geneva. While it took a while
to figure out how to get to the English pages of their web site, we were able
to contact the spa by email and efficiently schedule our three appointments.
We were greeted by the staff and led to the changing rooms by an staff member
who spoke English. The facilities are clean and modern, but signage of men's
and women's facilities were not apparent unless you knew what to look for
(I surprised a woman in the men's hammam). I enjoyed a message under effusion,
which was relaxing and enjoyable. The therapist did not speak English, but
my limited French was enough to understand most of her instructions and questions.
The use of a provided thong was different from my US experiences but more
than sufficient to preserve my dignity. The massage was more of the Swedish
style and, while relaxing, was not a vigorous as the therapeutic style I've
gotten used to. The 45-minute duration was a little short. My other two friends
thoroughly enjoyed a 60-minute aromatherapy massage and we all were encouraged
to enjoy the hammam and the relaxation area both before and after our treatments.
We are all looking forward to a return visit during our next business trip
in May 2006. -- Steven L., December 2005

Fichteneck Sauna, Berlin,
Germany This day spa is located in the Steglitz suburb of Berlin. Public
bus and subway stops are very close. The spa is behind a residential building
with clear signs posted. The facilities are modern (white decor) and very
clean. A €17 daily fee includes steam, sauna, quiet room, pool, icy dip, loungers,
showers, lockers (€10 deposit), towels, robes, hairdryer, summer terrace,
outside smoking area. Additional treatments include hydrotub, massage, body
polish, facial and nails (adjacent building). A cafe serves drinks (alcohol
too), cakes and salads at reasonable prices. Spa products are available for
purchase. Thursdays are for women only, all other days are mixed. My sister
and I visited on 11.12.03 (woman's day) and pampered ourselves for six hours.
Our appointments had been mis-scheduled, but aestheticians worked late just
to accommodate us. My sister enjoyed the Californian massage; I had the massage/body
polish. Our total cost, including hydrotub, mineral water and wine was €130
(approx $150 or £100). I will visit Fichteneck Sauna again in 2004!

Inchydoney Lodge & Spa,
Clonakilty Cork, Ireland I stayed at the spa for two nights and had the relaxation package.
To be brutally honest, I really felt that some of the treatments were not
worthwhile. For instance, the temperature for the Vichy shower massage was
quiet worrying. The massage wasn't remotely relaxing, and for a four star
spa, the noise level was totally unacceptable. The staff seemed nice
but not very professional. The girl who gave me my massage was wearing
pink runners -- not very professional in my opinion. I have been to other
spas and I can say that I will not return to Inchydonney. --

Zara Spa, Dead Sea,
Jordan
When in Jordan, a Dead Sea Spa is a must as far as I'm concerned. The
one at the Movenpick is considered to be the best and I have to say
the resort is absolutely stunning. It all looked very luxurious, with nice
slippers, robes and towels and complimentary packets with cotton buds,
q-tips and nail files and all. We didn't like to be kept waiting upon
arrival (we could have stayed in bed 15 mins more!). We didn't like men
having no apparent business there passing through while we were sitting in
the relaxation area. We liked the services very much. The facial was
good, the salt scrub and mud wrap not just excellent but actually a must.
Worth a big tip for the lovely Indonesian girl that was helping us. --

CASA PLAYA SPA
at the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Baja California, Mexico. I was instantly nostalgic to see your listing for Casa Playa Spa on
your California section. My husband and I stopped here for a
night on our honeymoon early this year, and had spa treatments and a nice
stay in our ocean front room. The Spa treatments were lovely and we could
feel and smell the ocean near by. It was one of our more relaxing
moments on an otherwise hectic honeymoon! -- Patricia A.
CASA PLAYA SPA
at the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Baja California, Mexico. This hotel and spa work really hard at coming up with promotions
that will suit the day tripper, the weekend tripper, and the family
vacationer. While not a luxury resort by any means, it has strong
ties to the community and has been in business perhaps longer than any of
the hotels around it -- which is a good sign. It's a terrific place
to stop with a family member, your children, your spouse, or just your
friend, for a day of good food, good beach access, that funky Mexico
shopping experience in the open markets, music, fun, overindulgence, or to
sleep away the day on the beach, after a spa treatment or two. The place
is always clean, the food always well-repaired, the staff always friendly,
the spa always welcoming. My children love the beach day with Dad,
and my wife slips away to the spa. I recommend Casa Playa to my
friends and family for the perfect spot to try a "spa weekend" for
consistently reasonable prices. -- John G.

Aventura Spa Palace, Cancun,
Mexico I was robbed of my Raymond Weil watch at this spa. Management first
insisted it was taken by another guest, and then insisted that I misplaced
it. They ultimately took the position, at my departure, that there was no
proof the watch was stolen. The facilities were nice and services were
adequate. -- Gabriele L.
This brings up a valuable point which will benefit
our readers. Most every website for a spa facility will have a "FAQ"
or "Policies" section, and it is common practice for spas to request and advise
that guests 1) do not wear jewelry or watches to the spa because damage
from products, steam, and water may result, and 2) do not bring valuables
to the spa. The spa cannot reliably guarantee security or "keep
watch" over purses, valuables, and such (particularly if there are no lockers).
While we've found that spa staff is almost always trustworthy, fellow guests
are often not. We regret your watch was stolen. -- Editor
Aventura Spa Palace, Cancun,
Mexico Pros: I would wholeheartedly recommend the Aventura Spa Palace as a
spa vacation destination. The cost of the trip was reasonable, the accommodations
were first class, and we were treated extremely well. We utilized the spa
quite a bit (it's world class) and we loved the gym and indoor pool, as well.
I'd give the entire trip a 9 out of 10 points. Cons: I would recommend that
you stay away from the "timeshare tour" which guest services will offer. No
matter what they say otherwise, they WILL try very hard to sell you a membership.
We were with them for two hours before they accepted "no" as an answer. It
wasn't a very pleasant experience at all. Some of the buffet style restaurants
aren't that good, but the breakfasts are incredible. The rooms are great,
but make sure to ask for a water view BEFORE you check in -- otherwise you
may end up looking out of your window at another building. Finally,
leave for the airport four hours before your flight. The lines at the airport
are also world class -- and we just made our plane. We left Aventura Spa
Palace at 11:30 for a 2:30 flight, after being assured by bellhops that we
had plenty of time. We didn't, and nearly missed our plane. --

Shoal Bay Spa Resort,
New South Wales, Australia
It’s exciting to discover a world-class spa in a little known location.
On the east coast of Australia, a few hours north of the bustling metropolis
of Sydney, sits a gem of a spa resort tucked into a pretty waterfront overlaid
with atmospheric cafes and delicious restaurants.
I had heard about it only
as a giggling whisper from newlyweds - romantic and stunningly beautiful -
and decided I needed some serious post-baby’s-birth pampering in lovely rural
surroundings.
It wasn’t until I found myself
under the professional hands of my well trained therapist cocooned in state-of-the-art
hydro equipment that I realized I had stumbled on the best kept secret in
this vast country. Pete also came out of his treatment relaxed and looking
and feeling better then he had for months.
As well as a good selection
of treatments, the spa offers hot and cold spa pools and a 25-metre lap pool.
The staff are friendly and helpful -- from the reception desk to the cleaners
of the water view apartments -- including accommodating our baby – something
often missing at adult focused spas. From our balcony of our well-appointed
self-contained rooms, we could see across the warm blue waters of Shoal Bay,
ringed by peninsulas of green forest and blue hills. It’s a stunningly picturesque
place, hence the attraction to honeymooners; however I now recommend it as
also worthy of anyone who wants to relax and rejuvenate in luxury and beauty.

Phoenix Arrien, Travel Writer. -- Sept. 2004
Yonka Skin Care Institute & Day
Spa, Neutral Bay, New South Wales, Australia The Yonka Skin Care Institute and Day Spa specializes in the products
of the same name. Although they do appear to have some auxiliary product lines,
these take a back seat and, in my experience, they won’t even mention them
unless you specifically ask. They are mostly lifestyle-oriented products in
any event (home fragrance, candles and the like).
The point of fragrance brings
me to the products. If you aren’t a major aromatherapy fan, it is unlikely
that this spa will please you in the least. Although these products are not
artificially fragranced, they are certainly not shy on aroma. I have had body
massages at this spa that have cleared my sinuses (their body products contain
copious amounts of rosemary and I gather other similarly “punchy” plants).
That is my main point -- the scent of rosemary will hit you the moment you
walk through the door.
In my experience, the spa
has always been nice and warm and the décor is an interesting mix between
clinical (white laminate cabinets, frosted glass) and homely (wooden but lightly
coloured floorboards). Each treatment room has a small mounted radiant heater.
The spa is scrupulously clean and there are numerous air purifiers (possibly
to tone down the rosemary!).
It seems they only have a
very small clientele and the few staff appear to have known one another for
a long time. I enjoy quiet spas. Equipment-wise things are fairly basic. They
are well fitted out, but there are no lifting, slimming machines and the like.
All the treatments are
“hands on” and I prefer this approach. So far I’ve always been treated on
time. My aesthetician recommends basic products very politely. They are
not pushy on selling anything (at least not to me) which means I need to
make a point of asking questions. Once asked my aesthetician will happily
talk and advise away – worth keeping in mind if you do attend.
The product catalogue from the manufacturer is good to take away and study
if you’re so inclined. Then on your next visit you have a base to work
from. -- Georgia C.

Studio419 Day Spa and
Salon, Anchorage, AK I was completely unhappy with my visit to Studio 419. I paid $40.00 for a
pedicure given to me by a trainee. She had no formal training at all and
it showed. The "spa pedicure" wasn't a true spa pedicure -- it was done in
a vibrating footbath I could buy for myself at a drugstore. If I wanted a
trainee to give me a pedicure I would have paid $10.00 and went to a
beauty school. Plus, the place was poorly organized and felt like a
run-down house. I also happened to use the tanning bed with no assistance
from the front desk, and the tanning bed had a huge crack in it. --

Tree of Life, Patagonia,
AZ
The Tree of life sells itself on spiritual consciousness and creating
a 'youthening' with fasting on green juices. I did not have a
medical examination and I was not weighed. I had asked management
about my weight before the fast but he said I had nothing to worry about.
In his book he does mention that no one should do a fast if they are 10
pounds or ore under weight. By his calculation I should have weighed 160
pounds. I was 135 pounds when I started and when I finished I was 119
pounds.
The accommodation is box
room, two single beds with only one electric portable heater that can not
generate enough heat to keep the room warm. No private bathroom or
toilet. The toilet and bathroom is communal, outside in the courtyard. A
flashlight is needed to navigate as there is no outside lighting. The
showers were sometimes cold. The hot tub spa was full of stagnant water
and filthy with algae. Mice and vermin were apparent around the
accommodation too.
I had my house burgled in
England during my stay, so my stay was cut short by 11 days. The cost was
$5000. The tree of life does not give any refunds regardless of any
reason. They ask for payment up front. My sister called from England on
the last day of the fast to inform me that my house has been burgled, the
fridge, cooker, washing machine, bed, TV stolen and the kitchen and
bathroom flooded causing the down stairs ceilings to collapse. I informed
management of my bad news. He said. ‘You now have had a second fast. The
water is a symbol of you flushing away toxins.’ His wife said with a
smile, ‘This is a challenge to let it all go.’ -- Arthur B., 2007

Arizona Biltmore Resort, Phoenix, AZ. I've never been anyplace like this before, and likely never will be lucky
enough to visit any place like this again. It's a one of kind resort
oasis in the desert of Arizona, offering the most opulent luxury I've ever
encountered. The heavy mystical spirit of the area, from years
gone by, was palpable in the air. From the food, to the accommodations,
to the close to a hundred different spa treatments available, and just to
the visual splendor of Wright's architecture, this is one of the places that
are worth visiting just for the destination. Were it not for meetings
in town, I'd have stayed on the grounds of my castle in the desert the entire
time. --

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, AZ Canyon Ranch is a wonderful spa in an exquisite setting on the Sonora
Desert with nearby canyons for hiking, climbing, bike riding and power
walking. There is no end to the options for: exercise, yoga, stress
management, fitness evaluations and professional consultations. The meals
were gourmet, artfully prepared and nutritious; an expertly trained
nutritionist was available to assist in meal selections for the diet
challenged. The staff was prompt, courteous and efficient. There are two
whirlpool spas and a cold dip in the clothes-optional women's area and
three outdoor pools for leisure and exercise. Regrettably, the water is
treated with chemicals, rather than a state of-the-art ozone generator.
Likewise, the skin, hair and nail products are laden with chemicals and
there are no organic options in the treatment facilities. My
daughter-in-law guest is chemically sensitive and could not take advantage
of any facial, skin or beauty treatments. However, the general experience
at Canyon Ranch is truly unique with unlimited possibilities to attain
greater fitness and wellness in a supportive, nourishing environment. Not
one staff interaction was negative or critical; no one was pushing
products or services for purchase. The fixed rate for room and board
included many extras which were lavishly delivered and simple to schedule.
I would return, but my daughter-in-law will need an alternative spa for
which I will continue to search, so that I can again gift her with a
relaxing vacation. -- Marcia O.

Mii
Amo at Enchantment Resort, Sedona, AZ.
It is sad to think that a
spa so beautiful and gracious in their welcoming could have overlooked the
basic need for quiet when the spa was constructed. All the treatment
rooms echo with sound from either another treatment room (hearing a
discussion between therapist and client) or the sound of doors closing and
opening and lastly a basic design flaw--hearing the steam room "pipes"
blast through the walls. I've had three treatments so far and
all three therapists have agreed that this is a major flaw in an otherwise
calm environment. The management is aware of this and it will
probably cost a great deal to put in soundproofing. Please bear in
mind, however, that the staff is great and accommodating to your needs.
The problem is structural to the building. -- Peter A.

CASA PLAYA SPA
at the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Baja California, Mexico. I was instantly nostalgic to see your listing for Casa Playa Spa on
your California section. My husband and I stopped here without
a reservation, for a night on our honeymoon early this year, and had spa
treatments and a nice stay in an ocean front room. The Spa treatments were
lovely and we could feel and smell the ocean near by. It was one of
our more relaxing moments on an otherwise hectic honeymoon that had too
many disasters!

-- John G.

Claremont Resort & Spa,
Berkeley, CA I've been to the deluxe Claremont Resort & Spa many times,
including on my wedding day eleven years ago, so I'm disappointed and
surprised to have to submit a negative review. My last visit was
really not up to standard, especially at the deluxe prices the Claremont
charges. The spa ambiance is lovely and restful, but I had the following
problems: 1. Robes not available the second day. The spa provides large-size robes
on request but was "out" on day 2 because of a busy weekend. The regular
size robes do not cover a size XL woman, which was embarrassing when
meeting and walking down the hall with a male massage therapist!
2. The same massage therapist was assigned for two back-to-back
treatments: deep-tissue massage and reflexology. The deep-tissue was
fine, but the therapist was not very experienced or knowledgeable in
reflexology, which was disappointing. 3. The fruit was bruised and tired-looking, very unappealing. 4. There was no one checking the front desk at the salon, so my pedicure
appointment started late. The person who did my pedicure was very
brusque and rude when I wandered into the salon area looking for a staff
person, but later when she did my pedicure was fakely sweet and chatty,
clearly in pursuit of a tip. 5. The products used for my facial stung my skin and left me with red,
irritated cheeks for two days afterwards. The experience was not all negative. The front desk staff was pleasant
and efficient, the facility was very clean and the atmosphere was
lovely. The spa technicians who performed my services were all
competent. Unfortunately the overall spa experience, when combined with
the very poor customer service and high prices at the hotel, was very
disappointing and not worth the high price tag. -- Twyla H.

Urban Retreats, West Hollywood,
CA For my boyfriend's birthday, I arranged for a surprise 60-minute massage over
his lunch hour. I made the appointment well in advance, and specifically requested
two things: NO deep tissue (light Swedish only) and NO male massage therapists.
When my boyfriend arrived, he was given a very deep tissue massage (all elbows,
he said) by a short dark-haired man! Thinking this was the "surprise" I had
planned for him, he didn't mention how uncomfortable (in several ways) the
massage had been, until a couple days later. As soon as I heard what had happened,
I called the spa to discuss my complaint. Each person I spoke with "did
not have the authorization" to handle my complaint. The one woman who DID
have authorization never returned my calls, despite over a month of messages.
I finally gave up after 5 weeks. In sum, it's a very poorly run spa. -- Jessica

Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa, Newport Beach, CA
I just wanted to comment on a new spa that was a most
welcome surprise. I am a Specialty Food Consultant and was invited
down to Marriott Newport Beach Hotel & Spa's $70 million
grand-reopening, to try their new restaurant "Sam & Harry's."
Not being a big fan of traditional
ho-hum steakhouses, I was thoroughly impressed by this new east-coast
transplant-(the original Sam & Harry's is 5 minutes from the White
House). A scrumptious meal could even be had by non-meat eaters, by
ordering the jumbo crab cakes -- fairly "bursting their britches" with
huge chunks of crab--flanked by some delectable sides such as
perfectly sauteed spinach and the Cheesy sweet potato gratin.
The next morning I woke from a "best-dreams
ever" sleep in their famous Marriott bed which has a feather bed
topper, sky-high count Egyptian cotton sheets, and tons of down
pillows-ahhhh. After my in-lobby Starbuck's coffee, I decided to check
out the luxurious 14,000 square food Pure Blu Spa. Glam it up with
beauty treatments, work up a sweat at the gym, relax in the quiet room
where you can also partake of a selection of fruits, herbal teas, and
naturally flavored waters. The only difficult part is deciding to
choose from the menu of treatments that are offered. I felt totally
rejuvenated after my heavenly aromatherapy massage, followed by their
Pure Blu O2 skin-plumping facial. (Although next time I'm definitely
going to treat myself to the Signature Shell Therapy-which uses heated
shells to soothe away your cares).
Plus the location gets extra credit points for
being just steps away from the unparalleled collection of stores

seafood-what more could a girl want? -- Janice N., May 2006

Spa Casino Resort, Palm
Springs, CA My daughter and I went to Spa Casino in May 2003 for a Mother's Day Spa Day.
When we arrived at the spa,
it was very crowded and noisy. We were herded with 10 to 15 other women
as staff pointed down a hallway in an effort to explain where showers and
steam rooms are located.
At the counter a menu was
casually flipped to us and we were told to pick our lunch selections, which
were to be eaten in the locker room where tables were set up. We were
told to bus our own trays.
When my daughter asked about
the noise level, the desk staff responded "It's Saturday and it's busy."
We thought that was a strange response to make to clients who had come for
what was advertised and promised to be a "Tranquility Day."
When we went to the steam
room, a patron was complaining about the aroma scent being too strong.
The attendant started bickering with the patron -- with the door to
the steam room left wide open! Another patron had to interrupt and ask
that the door be closed. The attendant left, saying "If she doesn't
like it here she can leave." When my daughter and I left the steam
room, she broke into tears from the disappointment.
The entire "spa day" was
a special gift for me, and she had paid $680.00 in expenses for the experience.
Because my daughter was still crying during her treatment, a young lady from
the front desk came and spoke with us. She wouldn't give us a refund,
but she said we could return on another weekday.
We both felt terrible, and
wanted to leave, so we did. We felt they pulled a bait and switch by not providing
the experience they advertised. They didn't seem to care that they had patrons
walking around tearful and looking miserable.
I am requesting they refund
my daughter her money and am requesting your assistance.
-- Virginia, May 2003

attempted to contact Spa Casino Resort on Virginia's behalf. Regrettably,
our telephone calls to Spa Casino were not returned, and our emails to the
spa director of Spa Casino Resort were bounced back as undeliverable, as were
our emails to the hotel staff. The spa and resort has recently undergone renovations
and in November, launched the new facilities. Ultimately, the spa refunded
Virginia's daughter's money, sent a letter of apology, and included a gift
basket. A regrettable experience, but a professional resolution. - K.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (SAN FRANCISCO, SAUSALITO,
OAKLAND, BERKELEY, EAST BAY) |
Back |
re:fresh, San Francisco,
CA I have been to re:fresh day spa on two separate occasions for two different
treatments. The environment of the day spa is very nice. The decor is very
minimalist and the facilities have always been clean and well-maintained.
When you arrive, you are shown to a locker room, given a robe and slippers,
and told to change and then wait in the co-ed waiting area. The waiting area
is comfortable and they serve you hot tea or water.
On one occasion, my treatment
was for a Pohaku Stone Massage, was not great but was very good.
On the second occasion, my
treatment was a facial. I arrived at exactly the time for my appointment,
but was told that I was late. I protested, and was then informed the spa had
a mandatory 15-minute advance check-in policy, so, my treatment would have
to be cut short. I was not informed of this policy when I booked
the appointment.
I was shown to the locker
room where I quickly changed. My aesthetician greeted me in the locker room
and took me back immediately to the treatment room and set to work on the
facial. She sped through the treatment and did not complete all aspects of
the facial. The treatment I requested was a deep cleansing facial with arm,
neck, and upper back massage. She did not perform any massage but did give
me an "upgrade" on my mask since she couldn't do the whole treatment due to
my "late arrival." The facial was one of the worst I have ever
received and I was very unhappy with the service.
I complained to the manager
on duty and asked for a discount on the service. She refused because I had
been "late" but did give me a free upgrade on a future facial, which is useless
to me because I won't be returning to their facility. The staff is generally
polite but I will not return to this day spa when my patronage obviously means
very little to them. -- January 2003
Editor's Comment:
While it is regrettable that this patron had an unpleasant experience at the
spa, this review makes for a good opportunity to discuss spa etiquette.
It is industry policy to request all patrons check in sufficiently early that
they are ready for the treatment to begin at the appointed time, as opposed
to simply arriving AT the appointed time. As this reader points
out, a beverage is usually offered, and there is time required to change into
spa attire, begin to relax, and prepare for the treatment. The aesthetician
must clean the room between patrons, and ready it with fresh linens and the
components of the service to be rendered. Massage therapists need a break
-- the tension they removed from YOUR muscles, are now infused in their hands
and shoulders and arms. This "window of time" afforded by an early check-in
is customary throughout the industry and can be found on most every website
for a spa or salon. In addition to making for a more pleasant experience
for the patron, it also avoids penalizing the next patron, who must then wait
for the room to be cleared and prepared following a late start for the previous
guest. Even five minutes delay can make quite a bit of difference in an efficient
schedule. It would appear from this review that the spa elected
to adhere to its policy (and likely had another patron waiting), and appropriately
so. It would have been good customer service had the spa informed the patron
of the early check-in policy, at the time the service was booked. Unfortunately,
that didn't occur. The spa may have mistakenly thought this returning
patron was already aware of the policy. In any event, the upgrade
during the treatment, and an offer of a future upgrade, is, in our opinion,
a generous response to the situation and indicative of the spa caring for
its clientele. Unfortunately, it wasn't perceived as such, but we respect
that it is often difficult to remedy a disappointing experience. Our readers
should take note: Whenever possible, arrive as early as fifteen minutes
in advance to enjoy your spa treatment to the fullest. -- K. F.

SANTA BARBARA |
Back |
Sea Spa, Santa Barbara,
CA This review relates to a lack of courtesy and public relations. I contacted
Sea Spa to organize a bridal shower. The web site and services offered look
sumptuous. Unfortunately, the service did not live up to that promise. It
took them 5 days to return my call, despite the fact that I was told someone
would call the next day. The phone staff were somewhat abrasive. For example,
when I asked if salon services (such as manicure/pedicure) would be available
to a bridal party in addition to spa services, I was simply told "We are not
a nail shop." When I shared this information with the group concierge and
suggested that from a customer relations perspective, it was somewhat off-putting,
she said simply "You are one of a million, and we are number one, so this
must be an issue with you." I was surprised, as most other service-oriented
businesses I deal with at least give lip service when feedback is offered
in a friendly way. Based on this episode, I decided to plan the spa party
elsewhere, and feel strongly enough about it that I wanted to share the experience
with others. -- Melissa F., February 2004
Editor's Note: Inquiring
as to whether manicure and pedicure services are available at spa is a perfectly
reasonable request, particularly given the reason for the visit -- bridal
party preparation. To dismiss the provision of manicures and pedicures
as services offered only in "nail shops" sounds snide, and does a disservice
to nail technicians everywhere. -- K.F.
