Singapore is an island nation located at the southern
tip of the Malay Peninsula. It is one of the few remaining
city-states in the world and the smallest country in
Southeast Asia. Singapore consists of 63 islands,
including mainland Singapore. There are two man-made
connections to Johor, Malaysia — Johor-Singapore Causeway in
the north, and Tuas Second Link in the west. Jurong Island,
Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa are the largest of
Singapore's many smaller islands. Singapore is a
popular travel destination. The Orchard Road shopping
district is one of Singapore's most well-known and popular
tourist draws. The center of the city —
consisting roughly of Orchard, the Riverside and a chunk of
Chinatown — is known as the CBD (Central Business District).
A few of the districts are:
Riverside
The Singapore River forms a central artery in Singapore's
densely packed Central Business District.
Orchard
Road
Orchard Road, named for the nutmeg trees which used to line
the road in the 1800s, is the main shopping street of
Singapore. North of the Singapore River, to the west of the
Central Business District.
Bugis and Kampong Glam
Eclectic shops
and restaurants, promenades and a shopping bazaar
Chinatown
Originally a Chinese settlement at the time the colony was
founded. Chinatown's primary attraction is the town itself,
with ethnic shops and restaurants.
East
Coast
Largely residential, but favored by locals for its white,
sandy beaches and iconic restaurants.
Sentosa
An island off the Southern Coast of Singapore, and popular tourist destination
for both locals and visitors who enjoy a quirky amusement-park
setting. The island offers
Underwater World and similar activities and amusements for
families and children, as well as Singapore's best (most
traditional) beaches. It will
soon have a casino, as well as other upgrades. The island
has an award-winning spa. |
