A Winter White Issue

White is many things. Soothing. Calming. Clean. Pure. White is its own multi-faceted color. White isn't the absence of color; it's a backdrop against which color can reflect or inspire. White is fog in the morning. White is steam from a mineral spring. White is a downy soft robe, a stack of fresh towels, the drape of white sheet on fresh skin. White is a perfect orchid, a lacy dandelion. White is restful. White is promising -- add this, or add that, and you have something new.

In this issue, we share with you our white inspired spa destinations, treatments, recipes and favorite products. We hope they inspire you to find your own shades of white.

Low-anchored cloud,
Newfoundland air,
Fountain-head and source of rivers,
Dew-cloth, dream drapery,
And napkin spread by fays,
Drifting meadow of the air,
Where bloom the daisied banks and violets,
And in whose fenny labyrinth
The bittern booms and heron wades;
Spirit of lakes and seas and rivers,
Bear only perfumes and the scent
Of healing herbs to just men's fields.
Mist, by Henry David Thoreau

Award Winning Day Spa in Washington, D.C.

Located in downtown Washington, DC, Nusta Spa offers a full range of customized spa services for women and men. With almost 5,000 square feet of space, Nusta is the first urban day spa of its kind designed with high performance "green" interiors which are healthier, more efficient, and environmentally responsible. In fact, Nusta Spa is the nation's first and only spa accepted into the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) pilot program for commercial interiors.

Nusta's commitment to the environment is not its only unique feature. It is committed to providing each client with a spa experience that surpasses his or her every expectation. From the treatments we offer to the products used, from the music selection to the color of the lighting in the treatment rooms (the pristine white on white treatment rooms can be bathed in your color preference, depending on your mood, by technician manning a LED dial), the service philosophy is based on creating a unique spa experience for each guest, customized to his or her individual needs and preferences.

The Delano Hotel & Aqua Spa

A Pearl in South Beach Miami

Named after United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose family maintained a residence in this landmark building for many years, Ian Scharager's Delano Hotel continues to cater to the elite.

The Delano is a luxury oceanfront hotel in the heart of Miami Beach's Art Deco District. Frequented by fashion models, designers, Hollywood execs and celebrities the Delano boasts unique cutting-edge design and famed all-white guest rooms. Guests are awed by massive 25 foot long white billowing drapes in the lobby, whimsical garden with an oversized chess board and 20 lb playing pieces. Vogue has called the Delano "America's coolest hotel."

The hotel's "flowing white" interior was designed by renowned French designer Philippe Starck with hotelier Ian Schraeger. Starck designed the Delano's Water Salon- the outdoor pool area with a spacious sundeck, a beautiful 'infinity-edge' heated swimming pool, intimate bungalows (perfect for both privacy or the observation of fellow beautiful people), and a variety of niches for lazy floating, quiet meditation, eating and drinking. Enjoy either the tumbling sound of waterfalls, or, underwater classical music.

When you've slipped into your poolside robe and left your cabana behind, make your way to the Delano's David Barton Gym and its Aqua Spa. The gym has managed to elevate exercise to a lavish and elegant experience with white easy chairs and orchids among the exercise equipment. The spa has a 360-degree view of Miami Beach and is modeled on an ancient bathhouse and offers its guests a full-service spa menu, and plenty of reasons to linger, with a rooftop Solarium, Sauna, and Meditation Room.

I'll have the Warm Cream Manicure and Crème Fraiche Body Wrap, please...

Shades of Soft White

The Spa at Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland, offers a facial with extract of white orchids. The Sombun Facial is a balancing organic facial for normal to oily skin with an exotic synergy of white orchid extract and jasmine essential oil to purify and decongest oily skin.

Tru Spa in San Francisco, California is striking, clean and modern, with bright and airy natural light and shades of white throughout the spa, gleaming bamboo floors, and silver-beaded curtains leading into the well-appointed locker room, which is well-stocked with a array of luxe beauty products. While some consider this spa a shrine to minimalism, it doesn't overlook the comfort factor. Before your treatment, unwind in the shower room, or curl up in the waiting area with brownies or cheese and crackers.

Shija Day Spa overlooks Union Square in Manhattan, New York. Korean for "let's relax", Shija is the embodiment of luxury and comfort in its well appointed 4000 square foot space with thick white carpeting, luxe white sofas and furnishings. The newly renovated spa now offers a soothing steam sauna, rejuvenating hydrotherapy bath and gorgeous views of Union Square from a private lounge, perfect for accommodating groups. To continue your winter white spa experience in New York, opt for the specialty of the house -- the Crème Fraiche Body Luxury Wrap (60 min $160.00). Your body is gently exfoliated with liquid sugar before a warm, hydrating wrap consisting of cocoa butter and crème fraiche is applied. After 20 to 40 minutes, a relaxing shower rinses off any residue and the treatment is concluded with a light moisturizer. The aroma throughout is alluring and relaxing.

Guests of the White Barn Inn & Spa in Kennebunkport, Maine, enjoy butler-drawn baths. The bath butler arrives at an arranged time and transforms the bath with richly fragrant waters and flickering candles. Try the Orchid Milk Bath, drawn with a blend of orchid, neroli, tangerine and ylang ylang. Candles twinkle and fresh Orchids are floated on the water.

For the ultimate winter manicure, try a warm cream manicure at Feline Day Spa in Manhattan, New York. Alexandra of Feline Day Spa tells us that their popular manicure is $18 and includes soaking your hands in specially warmed single-use containers of thick cream, which hydrates the nails and cuticles. "Most spas and salons have you soak your nails and cuticles in a water base with detergent added, which is exactly the wrong thing to do. It's so drying, in winter especially. Our warm cream manicure is actually a treatment for your hands." Your Warm Cream Manicure includes nail shaping, cuticle trimming, and polish.

Creamy White Bean and Spinach Soup

New Life Hiking Spa, Killington, Vermont, USA

This delicious soup is perfect for those afternoons you want to light the fire, curl up in your white cotton robe, and just "take a little soup."

2 cups dry navy beans
1 large onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 potato, skinned and diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1/2 cup 1% milk
1 tbs. low-fat cream or Neufchatel cheese
2 tsp. each Dill and Thyme
2 tsp  no-salt veggie broth
Spinach, 1 package frozen chopped or 1 bag fresh
1 tomato, diced (optional)
Dijon mustard to taste
Curry paste to taste
Oil from spray bottle or pump

If desired soak dry beans in water for several hours and discard soak water. Simmer beans for 2 hours in 8 cups of water, (6 cups if pre-soaked). After 1 hour add potato to beans. In a separate pan use a small amount of oil to sauté onion, garlic and spices until onion is translucent; add celery and continue for 15 minutes. Add to beans. When beans and celery are tender, pull out approx. 1/2 of the soup and puree with milk until silky smooth and throw back into main soup pot. Adjust thickness by either adding milk to thin out, or simmering for a while to reduce and thicken. Add herbs, mustard and curry paste. Just before serving add chopped spinach and tomato. Serves 6. Aromatic Milk Bath

Spa at Home

Cleopatra knew a thing or two about the benefits of beauty from the bath -- she bathed in milk. Milk acts as a skin moisturizer -- it's fortified with vitamins A and C, and is rich in vitamin D. These vitamins heal and condition the top layers of your skin. Taking a milk bath can be as simple as keeping an airtight jar of powdered milk adjacent to your bathtub and adding a cup to your running water (even with your favorite scents added), or, try this Aromatic Milk Bath. Use the mixed concoction immediately after making it, for soft and silky skin. Add to your warm drawn bath (be careful not to run too hot a bath...if the water is too hot you'll make scrambled eggs).

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup light olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon glycerin
  • 1/2 cup dried milk powder
  • 1 drop jasmine essential oil
  • 1 drop rose essential oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 cups distilled water

Beat together egg, olive oil, glycerin and milk powder with a whisk or hand held beater. While beating add essential oils. Continue beating until a smooth paste forms. Add the water a little at a time, continuing to beat.

Dandelion Moisturizer

Better Botanicals tells us its Dandelion Moisturizer is antioxidant-packed "health food" for dry/sensitive skin. This rich and creamy Ayurvedic potion was developed for delicate, dehydrated facial skin.

"Dandelion is often considered a weed, but it's actually a powerhouse herb packed with antioxidants Vitamins A and C as well as calcium, iron and potassium. All are key vitamins and minerals for healthy skin," Shafalika Saxena, Better Botanicals co-founder and herbal expert, said. "Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a powerful stimulant and tonic recommended by Ayurveda to increase your skin's strength and suppleness."

Plant oils, vitamins (A, C, G) and minerals (calcium, iron, potassium) restore luster, strength and suppleness to fragile, easily irritated skin. The moisturizer contains a rich blend of dandelion, sandalwood, rose, kulanjan, rosemary, lavender, honey and sunflower oil.

Dream Cream

LUSH Handmade Cosmetics describes it's best-selling "Dream Cream" thusly: "Those of us with skin that gives us severe problems sometimes (or all of the time) could spend our lives dreaming of a beautiful, clear, trouble free epidermis. We try many beauty creams and pharmaceuticals, you name it, we've used it, but still our bothersome skin won't behave. Give Dream Cream a try; we get loads of letters about how well it works. Why? Because it is made with every calming plant we can get our hands on: oats have been used on the skin as far back as Celtic times, softening rose water, calming lavender and chamomile, olive oil to moisturize and loads more. The scent sometimes takes a bit of getting used to as it's not your average floral thing, more of a herbal approach. Get some. There's no point in having a dream unless you're going to have a decent crack at making it come true."

Halle Berry is famous among staff and fans of homemade cosmetics brand Lush after she bought 6 tubs of Dream Cream in one trip. Other celebrity fans of LUSH include Jude Law, Carol Smillie, Macy Gray, Susan Sarandon, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Adam Sandler -- if that kind of thing matters to you. It doesn't to us -- we just feature the products often because we are all admitted Lushaholics.
