GRAPEFRUIT: A NATURAL CHOICE FOR BEAUTY ON THE INSIDE AND
OUTSIDE
Spa facilities throughout the world have used
grapefruit extract in all aspects of beauty and spa treatments--from pampering
and energizing aromatherapy products to vitamin C-based skin and body
treatments. According to women's health expert Dr. Pamela Peeke, along
with the Florida Department of Citrus, registered dietician Carolyn O'Neil and
celebrity trainer Nancy Kennedy, "One glass of grapefruit juice provides vitamin
C, folate and potassium--nutrients women need daily to maintain a healthy mind
and body throughout their lives." Peeke also says "Some studies suggest
grapefruit juice provides physical benefits for women as well, like reducing
monthly bloating, keeping hair strong and building collagen in the skin." (www.sunwellnessmag.com)
Ever wonder how it got it's name? The
grapefruit is a citrus fruit which grows on trees in large clusters not
unlike grapes -- hence the name "Grapefruit." Most agricultural
authorities will tell you the fruit originated in Jamaica and is now
common throughout the Caribbean regions, and in Texas, Arizona, California,
and Florida, which grows 70 percent of the world’s supply. Israel is
also a popular origin for the fruit. Grapefruits are thought to be a cross
between oranges and the pomelo.
There are
three common varieties of Grapefruit -- "white" (actually a very pale
yellow), pink, and red. The white variety is usually smaller and more tart
than the pink. Large, ruby-red grapefruits were discovered growing in Texas
in 1929.
Fresh grapefruits are
available year-round depending on the area -- grapefruits grown in
Arizona and California are available January through August, and grapefruit
grown in Florida and Texas are usually available October through June.
Whether buying grapefruits to eat or to use for beauty treatments, choose
grapefruits that feel heavy in your hand. Avoid fruit that have soft
or wet spots. Thinner-skinned fruits are usually juicier but not necessarily
tastier. Grapefruits ripen when picked, and are best when stored
loose at a cool room temperature, or in the refrigerator.
The rind of the grapefruit, like any
citrus fruit, produces aromatic citrus oil which is considered by beauty
and health professionals to be a natural tonic with diuretic properties,
working well on cellulite conditions. Homeopathic practitioners use grapefruit
oil to help relieve depression and treat obesity, and to help prevent kidney
stone formation. Spa professionals use Grapefruit Essential Oil to enhances the
digestive, circulatory, glandular, urinary, and nervous systems, and consider it
an overall relaxer. A stimulating lymphatic massage with grapefruit
essential oil can promote the appearance of smooth, undimpled skin, enhance
circulation, and help regulate healthy body fluid levels. In addition, the
aromatic influence of grapefruit helps decrease appetite and balance
emotional extremes.
Grapefruit seed extract is being used to kill Strep, Staph, Salmonella, E. Coli,
Influenza, parasites, herpes, candida, fungi and traveler's diarrhea. The
extract is non-toxic and biodegradable, with no harmful side-effects. Many forms
of dermatitis, poison oak, poison ivy, cysts and other skin disorders are being
effectively treated with grapefruit seed extract added to a carrier oil. The
healing antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral effects of this extract, when added
to a carrier oil, seem to promote the healing of almost any abnormal skin
condition. (Note: never apply grapefruit skin extract directly, full-strength to
your skin or body).
Spa Index has several recipes to take
advantage of the delicious and healthy grapefruit -- from a simple but tasty
breakfast, to spa at home treatments. Or, take advantage of some of the
signature treatments available from these spa facilities:

SPA AT HOME
GRAPEFRUIT SPA SALT GLOW
This homemade product is a favorite in classes taught
by "Between Friends Too"
a Mesa, Arizona soap and bath product ingredient supplier. For the
"melt and pour" set who enjoy making their own home pampering products,
this is a terrific site for obtaining most of your spa at home
ingredients. The site sells all of the ingredients necessary for
this recipe, or, click on the oil hyperlinks to find more essential oil
suppliers.
1/2 cup fine mineral salts
1/2 cup fine dead sea salts
8 oz Macadamia nut oil
40 drops ruby red grapefruit essential oil
20 drops lemon essential oil
10 drops ylang ylang essential oil
Stir essential oils into the macadamia nut oil. Add the salts and
mix well. Pour into a hinged tight sealing jar. You can substitute the
Macadamia nut "carrier oil" with other carrier oils (i.e.
pistachio oil, sweet almond oil, hazelnut oil or a mixture of oils).
To obtain radiant skin with intense
moisturizing, swirl your salt glow with your fingertips or spoon
to blend. Scoop out a generous amount and apply with hand, washcloth or
loofah to entire body. Step into shower stream & watch your salt glow
bead up and roll off your skin. For a comfortable shave, apply your salt
glow prior to shaving, then rinse. Avoid any cuts or scrapes on your
skin.

SPA INDEX READER QUESTION:
"I am interested in possibly opening a
natural home spa. I don't do massages or feed people. All I do is wash
their hair, rinse, rub lotions into feet, and give them an over all
treatment. I use my all natural products and if they have problems or
questions I help them find or make a product for them. Like what kind of
oils for what kind of hair, or a specific perfume just for them. Do I need
any licensing or such to do this? I use 100% ALL natural products that I
make myself." -- Rosina SRosina
received two excellent responses from Spa Consultants:
Rosina: Regardless of the type of
business you begin - the fact remains you are starting a business and
must check with your city about business licenses. Additionally, when it
comes to massage (rubbing the feet) and hair there will be other
necessary licensing. Check with the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology,
as well as your local police department (for the massage). You should
also check into liability insurance - not just your homeowners- as you
will be "treating" people and more importantly, creating products -
there may be an insurance expense there. I suggest you do not begin this
business without covering all these bases and looking for any other
requirements. Leslie Wolski

Rosina: It sounds like you just
love what you do! I would call the State Board of Barbers and
Cosmetologists for MO and ask if you need licensing to shampoo hair and
rub feet in your state. In most states, you need a license to perform a
paid-service that involves touching a client. However, at cosmetic
counters where many department store cosmetic lines give complimentary
make-up consultations, licensure is waived. If you would like to know
about massage licensure, be sure to contact your city government. Melinda
