"What is a gold spoon spa treatment?" -- Ada B., Torrance, CA
You're likely referring to " Golden Spoons"
which is a treatment utilizing twenty-three karat plated
"spoons" during a facial. One spoon is actually heated and
warm to the touch, while the other remains cool or cold to the touch. This
treatment is based on the teachings of Father Sebastian Kneipp (of the Kneipp
Spa in Bavaria), and his principle of alternating hot/cold/hot/cold. Your
esthetician
will apply the warm and cool spoons alternately to generate
penetration of the creams and lotions, and also to open and close pores,
stimulating circulation. Since you are from Southern California, you'll be

Avocados are a cholesterol-free,
sodium-free, low saturated fat food with only 5.0 grams of fat per serving
-- a level usually acceptable for inclusion in a low-fat diet. In fact, most
of the fat found in an avocado is monounsaturated, believed by some
scientists to protect against heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.
In addition, avocados are "nutrient dense" in that they supply more of your
daily nutrient requirements for fewer calories spent. Avocados are nutrient
dense in potassium (with 60% more potassium than bananas) folate, dietary
fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin and vitamin B6. Source: California Avocado Commission.
AVOCADO ANGEL EGGS

1 dozen large hard cooked eggs, peeled
2 ripe California avocados
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon coarse ground garlic powder
2 tablespoons finely chopped shallots or green onions
2 teaspoons capers mashed, optional
Garnish, slivers of red, yellow or green bell pepper
Slice each egg in half lengthwise removing egg yolks.
Use egg yolks in another recipe (or save for one of our spa at home
treatments, below). Cut avocado in half and remove seed. Peel avocado and
cube. In bowl combine avocado, lemon juice and garlic mashing to blend. Stir
in shallots or green onions and capers, if desired. Fill each egg
white with avocado mixture. Garnish with bell pepper. Serve. Nutrients
per serving: 24 servings; calories 35; protein 2g; carbohydrates 1g; fat 3;
dietary fiber 1g; cholesterol 0mg; sodium 55 mg.

Avocado Dry Skin Masque

Beat the yolk of an egg until it is light and frothy, then
add the mashed pulp of a half avocado, blending it well (you may use a blender
at this point). Cleanse your face thoroughly before using this masque (or any
masque). Spread the avocado mixture over the face and neck evenly; relax on a
slant board or bed for about 20 minutes. Remove with clear tepid water and a
face cloth, followed by a rinse of cold water or a mild skin lotion. The result
should be a marked improvement in skin texture, and all-around revitalizing.
Avocado Oily Skin Masque

Put the white of an egg, a teaspoon of lemon juice, and
the mashed pulp of a half avocado into a blender. In seconds, you should have a
lovely green mixture. Wash your face and neck thoroughly, then apply masque
evenly on those areas. Relax for 20 minutes; remove with tepid water and a face
cloth. Follow with cold astringent or skin tonic.
Avocado Hand and Foot Treatment
Mix together 1/4 to 1/2 mashed fresh avocado, 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon honey,
1 teaspoon rice bran, and 10 drops of oil of evening primrose. Gently massage
this treatment onto your hands and feet, and leave in place for 20 minutes.
Rinse. This natural treatment will revive your dry, wrinkled and rough
hands, feet, elbows and knees. The avocado and egg nourish the skin with
proteins and oils; the rice bran exfoliates dead skin cells; the oil of evening
primrose contains precious gamma linolenic acids, essential for healthy hair,
skin and nails. Consider purchasing a small jar of Oil of Evening Primrose
capsules from your health food store. Open one, and voila...you have the
ingredient for this recipe.
