Dazzling fireworks, live entertainment, food, arts and crafts ignite the 44th annual waterfront party. More than 30 local bands appear on six stages along the City’s piers. Music begins at 2 p.m. and culminates in one of the West's largest fireworks displays at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks are launched
simultaneously from Aquatic Park and barges mid-bay near Alcatraz. Pier 39 and Aquatic Park provide fantastic views of the show as fireworks are launched directly in front of those areas. Admission is free, but parking is limited and expensive - we suggest public transportation:

SPA CUISINE
"Years ago, my mother and I used to visit a day spa and vegetarian cafe owned by the same person, Catherine's Spa and Cafe, in Los Angeles. They are now closed. We'd like to recreate our favorite lunch, which was a baked Fennel in a low-fat bleu cheese sauce that she made with cottage cheese.
It tasted so fattening, but wasn't. Any chance you can find the recipe?" -- Mary C., Torrance, CA.
CATHERINE'S FENNEL IN ROQUEFORT SAUCE
4 Fennel bulbs, trimmed and halved lengthwise
6-8 oz low-fat cottage cheese
2 oz Roquefort cheese
Ground black pepper
2 oz Fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
1 tsp safflower oil
3 oz watercress leaves
1 tsp cornflour
2/3 cup skim milk
2 tbsp dry vermouth
Blanch the fennel bulbs in a large saucepan of boiling water for 5 minutes, until the layers have separated and softened slightly. Drain and set them aside. Press the cottage cheese through a fine sieve into a bowl, and crumble the Roquefort cheese into the bowl. Add ground black pepper, and beat
well. In another bowl, blend the breadcrumbs with the safflower oil. Set aside. Preheat your oven to 350, open the layers of the fennel slightly. Set one-third of the cheese mixture aside, but spread the remaining cheese mixture on each layer of the fennel bulbs, and tuck in a few watercress leaves.
Repeat with each bulb. Place two bulbs, cut side down, in four individual gratin dishes (or use one shallow oven dish). In a small saucepan, blend the cornflour with 3 tablespoons of milk. Add the remaining milk, and cook over medium heat whisking continuously, until sauce has thickened slightly.
Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the vermouth and the reserved cheese mixture. Spoon the sauce over the bulbs, and sprinkle the oiled breadcrumbs on top of all. Bake for about 20 minutes, until the crumbs are golden. Serves 4, with 165 calories per serving, 113g of protein, 8g of fat, 10 mg of
cholesterol, and 530mg of sodium.

SPA AT HOME
THYME AND FENNEL SEED CLEANSER FOR NORMAL SKIN
Fennel has been used throughout history as an aid to digestion or as a slight diuretic. As an infusion, fennel seeds can be gently cleansing and toning for the skin, and they can help reduce puffiness and superficial irritation. Thyme, which is used in antiseptic preparations, is a good astringent.
Because this cleanser is very gentle, it can be used each morning. Dab it on your face and neck with a cotton ball, and rinse.
2 sprigs fresh thyme, crumbled (or 1/2 T dried Thyme)
2 teaspoons fennel seeds, crushed
1/2 cup boiling water
Juice of Half Lemon
Mix the thyme and fennel seed in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Add lemon juice and steep for 15 minutes. Strain the infusion and store the liquid in a jar, in the refrigerator.
