COWBOY POETRY AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
March 31, 2001 - April 1, 2001
With warmer weather approaching in the Western states, take a weekend with your family to Southern California. Send the kids to the amusement park while you attend a fun festival, golf, or spend some quiet time relaxing at a spa facility. The City of Santa Clarita is located 35 miles
northwest of downtown Los Angeles, California, just south of the Sierra Pelona mountain range, and north of the Santa Susanna and San Gabriel mountain ranges. Each year, the City hosts the Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival, a celebration of Western heritage held at historic Melody Ranch Motion
Picture Studio. During the festival, cowboys and cowgirls from all over the United States gather to enjoy music, poetry, Western art, gear, and food. Since 1915, when the studio first opened for business, a string of western films have been produced at its location. Gene Autry purchased the ranch
property in 1952, and Autry, William S. Hart, Gary Cooper, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne all filmed westerns at the Ranch until 1962. The Ranch was fully restored in 1990, and since that time, has only open to the public during this festival. For more information, call 661-255-4910.

SPA CUISINE
COWBOY CAVIAR ... a delicious, nutritious, and healthful alternative to high-caloric dips.
1 15-ounce can black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
1/4 cup finely chopped red sweet pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 or 2 fresh jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper, or to taste
Dash salt
In a bowl combine black-eyed peas, green onions, sweet pepper, garlic, oil, vinegar, jalapeno, black pepper and salt. Cover and chill overnight. To serve, transfer to serving dish. Serve with crackers or tortilla chips. Cover leftovers and chill for up to 4 days. Preparation time: 15 minutes
