TREATMENT EDUCATION
Are you curious as to the meaning of the various terms you see used in the spa brochures and articles you read? In each issue we spotlight a specific treatment as requested by our subscribers. Don't forget to view our comprehensive Glossary of Terms at the home page for more definitions and explanations of spa treatments.
"What is a caffeine bath and where can I have one? I'm a coffee junkie, will I like it?" Cheryl Horn, Audubon, PA.
Cheryl: You have most likely heard of an Indonesian treatment based on the theory that caffeine stimulates circulation. Thus, submerging in a a caffeine-spiked bath promotes health for the legs, arms, and body. While I doubt you'll find a spa that charges you to soak in a bathtub full of a coffee, you'll be delighted to know there is a treatment available not too far from you which will give you a delightful way to try this treatment. It's the Whipped Cocoa Bath at the newly opened Spa at the Hotel Hershey, in Hershey, PA. You'll find yourself bobbing in a bath of hot chocolate -- actual Hershey's Cocoa Powder is added to a frothing creamy bath. The Spa also offers a Chocolate Fondue Wrap and a Chocolate Mud Hydrotherapy Treatment using cocoa and moor mud. To try this delightful new experience, contact the Hotel Hershey at 717-533-2171 and tell them Spa Index sent you. Enjoy!

SPA AT HOME
We have some quick tips and easy recipes for creating a home spa treatment that costs only pennies. Open your pantry and have some fun making PINEAPPLE OLIVE OIL MASK. Pineapple contains bromeliad, a protein-digestive enzyme which helps rid the skin of dead cells and dirt. It also counteracts histamines, has anti-inflammatory properties, and is a mild astringent. Olive oil has excellent healing properties and is a good source of vitamin E, which restores the skin's surface. Use only the highest quality cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil -- it should go without saying that bread dippers and flavored oils ought be left on the shelf. Reach for the good stuff!
In a blender, combine 4 large pineapple chunks or 1/2 cup canned, drained pineapple and 3 tablespoons olive oil. Blend until almost smooth. Apply mixture to face with fingertips and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse face with warm water and pat dry.
FOOD FACTS, RECIPES, AND HEALTHY EATING
It's winter and our appetite asks for warm, comforting food. We can give in the "comfort food" desire without sacrificing healthy eating. In this issue we feature a wonderful recipe for WINTER CARROTS WITH HORSERADISH.
One tablespoon of horseradish has only six calories and no-fat. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends horseradish as part of a healthy, low-fat diet because of its fat-free, high-flavor qualities. Horseradish dates back 3,000 years and has been used as an aphrodisiac, a treatment for tuberculosis, a rub for low back pain, a bitter herb for Passover and an accompaniment for corned beef, chicken and seafood. Horseradish is a member of the mustard family (sharing lineage with its gentler cousins, kale, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and the common radish) and is cultivated for its thick, fleshy white roots. The bite and aroma of the horseradish root are almost absent until it is grated or ground. During this process, as the root cells are crushed, volatile oils known as isothiocyanate are released. Vinegar stops this reaction and stabilizes the flavor. For milder horseradish, vinegar is added immediately.
WINTER CARROTS WITH HORSERADISH
4 1/2 cups sliced carrots
1/2 cup mayonnaise (use vegan if desired)
2 T chopped onion
2 T Silver Spring Organic Prepared Horseradish (see product spotlight below)
1/4 tsp. salt
dash of pepper
1/4 cup crushed saltine crackers (7)
2 tsp. melted margarine
In saucepan cook carrots, covered in boiling, salted water 10 min. or till tender. Drain. Place in 1-QT. casserole. Combine mayonnaise, onion, horseradish, salt, and pepper. Spoon over carrots. Mix crumbs and margarine; sprinkle on top. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree oven 20 min. or till hot. Serves: 4-6
