Greetings from Spa Index News. Welcome to our first issue for
2004. We hope we find you healthy, happy, and ready to embrace the New
Year.
Our returning subscribers know that throughout the year, Spa Index and
Spa Index News shares a wealth of spa and wellness information,
including day spa specials, spa travel specials, recipes for spa at home
treatments and recipes for spa cuisine.
Wellness can come in many forms, however, and we are frequently asked by
our readers to refer them to spa facilities which treat body and soul,
but also recognize that pet companions can be a vital part of
"good therapy."
Research has shown that owning a pet can have measurable health
benefits. Studies conducted in nursing homes and among the general
public have shown that pet owners often have lower stress levels than
non-pet owners. The simple act of patting a pet can reduce your blood
pressure!
In this special issue, we've taken a bit of a departure from our usual
content. Instead, we'll spotlight PET FRIENDLY SPA PACKAGES and
FACILITIES and share a few ways you can return the love and care you
receive from your pets, by treating them to a spa experience of their
own.
Hotel Monaco (Various US Locations)
Pets and their owners travel in style at the Hotel
Monaco. Each boutique Hotel Monaco takes the term "Pet Friendly"
to a new level of style and service. They offer specially designed pet
packages to ensure your pet's happy and healthy stay at any Hotel
Monaco.
The Hotel Monaco's "usual" pet amenities include
gourmet dog cookies, clean-up bags, temporary dog tags, walking service,
and dog sitter service. In addition, the various locations of Hotel
Monoco each offer custom Pet Friendly packages for its guests, including
the New Orleans' Bone Appetite Package, which includes a welcome
gift of dog toy and VIP dog tag, comfy pet bed with turndown service
including treat and bowl of evian water, map to dog friendly parks, and
a dog walk by a member of management. A house vet is also on staff.
At the Hotel Monaco's San Francisco location,
the Bone Appetit package includes videotapes of Lassie, Babe and Dr.
Doolittle, available upon request. Pet massage and dog walking is
available through the staff at Spa Equilibrium -- located inside
the hotel.
For those guests who are not able to travel with a
pet, the Hotel Monaco's charming trademark amenity is offering a
companion goldfish for you. Guests wishing to sleep with the fishes can
request their own complimentary goldfish when making a reservation, or
upon check-in. During the day or night, the goldfish will be happy to
provide you with the perfect kind of companionship, relaxed and quiet.
Guests can enjoy the goldfish for the duration of their stay -- and even
name their temporary companion. Rest assured, all you need to do is
enjoy your goldfish and the hotel will handle the care and feeding.

Spa at Home:
Homemade Flea Collars |

We typically include a Spa at Home treatment recipe for our
home spa enthusiasts; in this issue, we'll stay on topic and
tell you how to make a natural flea collar for your companion.
An essential oil collar provides
protection against fleas, is economical, and easy to make. Start
by purchasing a soft material collar from your grocer or pet
store. In a small glass bowl, mix the following together:
1/2 teaspoon rubbing alcohol
1 drop Cedarwood essential oil
1 drop Lavender essential oil
1 drop Lemongrass essential oil
1 drop Thyme essential oil
1 drop Garlic essential oil - OR -
4 contents of garlic capsules (discard capsule shell).
Blend your ingredients together and then submerge and saturate
the new collar, soaking it until it has fully absorbed your
potion. Leave it to dry completely before putting it around your
pet's neck. You'll find it effective for approximately one
month.
Note: Animals have a much keener sense of
smell than do humans, so use a minimum quantity of essential oil
and increase the quantities if and when you find it necessary.
Use only high-quality, PURE essential oils, or your efforts will
have been wasted. One recommended provider is Green Valley

 GIRLS'
NIGHT IN! It's about midnight on a Friday, and the party at
Glorice Sanders's house is in full swing. Wine, champagne and
shrimp are spread out on a table. One sister is feeling so good
she's got her head back, her eyes closed and a silly grin on her
face. Another is lying in semidarkness in an upstairs bedroom,
enjoying a strong pair of hands working over her body. The rest
of the women are sitting around the kitchen table with their
hair wrapped in towels and their feet in basins of warm, scented
