My fiance surprised me with a deep tissue massage at the Grand Hotel Spa. For such an expensive massage, it was the worst massage ever. The massage therapist was very friendly, but he talked a lot and did not seem to know what he was doing. To be honest, I'm not sure what he was doing either -- but it was NOT relaxing. The whole experience was very bland and the atmosphere was "cheap." You could hear people talking and laughing outside the room and chairs moving from the floor above. 1 star experience at 5 star pricing. Very disappointed.

Owner Response: "Dear Ina. While we're glad you found the masseuse to be friendly, it is unfortunate that you feel the massage itself was not relaxing. Deep tissue work can be pretty intense, and we ask that you reach out to our team offline so we can look into this matter further. We hope to improve your perceptions and deliver the comfortable experience you expected." -- Grand Hotel Spa

Pay the modest fee to tour the grounds and the hotel. It's worth it. Have a drink and sit on the veranda.  The cocktail will be outrageously high and not top shelf or prepared by a skilled bartender (pre Covid maybe, but not now).  It's still a nice place to have a cocktail or tea. You can book a spa or salon service with a friend.  Just DON'T book a room, however. There is just no way to live up to the prices charged. Oh, and don't book dinner -- it's like banquet food. Uninteresting.  Afternoon Tea is okay, but not stellar. They simply cannot deliver quality which matches the prices charged. Stay elsewhere, visit, and enjoy it as a Day Visit.  A Day Visit will not disappoint you.  Heck, visit every single day of your stay on the island. Just don't sleep here.  You'll be disappointed.

Very expensive. Service was okay. We could not plug in (provided) coffee pot without unplugging the TV. Rooms have been mostly updated, but some details were overlooked. This was a once in a lifetime trip and stay for us and it was a big let-down. Would revisit Mackinac Island, but stay somewhere else.
