Hotel Kakslauttanen – Finland

Listed in EUROPE, Finland

Hotel Kakslauttanen is located in the Saariselkä fell area amidst beautiful Lapland scenery in the vicinity of Urho Kekkonen National Park. We enjoy excellent connections – Highway 4 is nearby and all scheduled buses drive right up to the hotel and Ivalo airport is just 35 kilometres away with a bus transfer straight to the hotel front-door.

The renowned Glass Igloos at Kakslauttanen provide an one of a kind opportunity to admire the northern lights and millions of stars of the crystal clear Lapp sky in a comfortable room temperature. Based on a groundbreaking idea and years of research and development, glass igloos are a marvel of modern technology. Built from a special thermal glass the temperature inside the igloo always stays at a normal level. It also prevents the glass from not getting white frosted, hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature outside drops to under -30°C. Every igloo is equipped with a toilet and luxury beds. On every evening a hot sauna and a refreshing ice hole are waiting for you.

The ancient Finns regarded the sauna as a sacred and healing place. The first saunas in Finland were smoke saunas, in which Finns used to combat harsh realities of the climate both for the enjoyment and for its physical, mental and even spiritual benefits.

The process of heating a smoke sauna is lengthy. When sauna is being heated up it is filled with smoke, which is ventilated out through an opening in the wall. A smoke sauna is the purest sauna alternative because it is disinfected by the smoke during the heating. The steam is soft, honey-flavoured and sweet and after the visit one is endowed with an incredibly pleasant feeling for many days.

Nowadays sauna is an integral part of Finnish Culture and is part of Finnish identity. Like a spiritual experience, it is something that cannot be described with words, but instead has to be experienced.

Kakslauttanen is the proud owners of the World’s Largest Smoke Sauna. The sauna is beautifully situated by the pond overlooking the Igloo Village. It provides room for over 100 persons in three separate saunas. Each sauna has its own relaxation room with an open fireplace, showers and WC and the large terrace between the two saunas is a great place for cooling off. In the winter you can dive into an ice-hole nearby, a perfect way to relax after hot air in the sauna.

In the smoke sauna building we have a large restaurant. Among other delicacies we offer salmon or traditional reindeer cooked in front of the guests’ eyes in the large open fireplace. The restaurant is also an ideal location for conferences, with our without the sauna experience. The seating capacity is 90 persons. In addition to the smoke saunas, every cabin is equipped with its own personal sauna.

The unique Santa’s Resort Kakslauttanen is now open. Santa’s resort offers an unforgettable destination with appealing winter and summer programs. Santa Claus has build a fabulous new Celebration house for his visitors’ use. There is space for over 250 people for dining, concerts, meetings, product launches and many more occasions.

If I could put 0 star I would. Horrific service, lies throughout and whole place was a con.
We were in contact with them all the way up until our visit and had booked a glass Igloo and specifically came there just for one.
We arrived to be told that there were igloos and we had been “upgraded” which was a cabin with no food, and half an igloo covered in thick snow and ice cold. We said we didn’t want this and asked if we could be moved to one and was told it was possible but tomorrow. We waited whole morning and was told again it wasn’t possible. Also that the restaurant had been closed for 9 months and we were told that it was open for room service! All we had was a old sandwich and a juice box in our fridge.
They said they would set an igloo up for us for photos as they couldn’t heat them so would book an afternoon out to have us take some pictures.
The afternoon came and we were looking forward to it to only be driven to a closed shop and told we couldn’t go to an igloo for pics.
We explained we wouldn’t have come. We only wanted to for the igloos and eventually after no help and being argued with, we left and went to another hotel which was wonderful!
The worst thing is, you could still book igloos while we’re there even though they weren’t available, and you can still do it now!
To top it off we have had no email back regarding our complaint, no refund in any sort at all, and no acknowledgement.

We have become alarmed with recent reviews and we've reached out to the management. While some issues are certainly Covid-Restriction related, a lack of communication should not have contributed to your disappointing experience. -- Spa Index Team

Terrible customer service. The resort should be closed as they clearly can’t afford to have enough people working to run it.

DO NOT STAY HERE complete false advertisement!!!!  We stayed here for a few days before Christmas and booked an igloo. When we arrived we had been given “an upgrade” to a wooden hut. We explained we didn’t want the upgrade and we paid for an igloo for a reason -- to have a 360 view of the lights. So the woman told us to stay put for a night and she would arrange an igloo. The following day we found out the truth -- that none of the igloos are available (yet still up and shown on the hotel's website as available) -- because not enough guests are present. So what does that mean -- if you only have a few guests, you CLOSE down the igloos? Why? We don't SHARE them.   We had been in close contact with the resort prior to our arrival and stay and they "forgot" to mention this odd policy.
