Set on a hill overlooking Val d’Orcia, Castello Di Velona is a restored 10th-century castle and fortress. It has been beautifully restored and is now home to a magnificent hotel, winery, and thermal SPA. The lofty location in this UNESCO designated site is ideal for guests to enjoy the best of Tuscany’s food, wine and wonderful countryside views.
Accommodations
Castelo di Velona offers both luxury rooms and suites on multiple levels, in two unique wings of the hotel. All guest rooms and suites are enhanced with individually selected decor, each complimenting its location in the resort. The rooms and suites are divided between the historic castle, and the SPA wing. All the rooms and suites, in both wings, face the breathtaking landscape of the Val d’Orcia and the surrounding vineyards. The newer SPA rooms and suites are characterized by a linear and contemporary design, travertine and corian. Enjoy oversized bathrooms with mineral water tubs and outdoor patios.
Thermal SPA
Castello Di Velona sits on top of mineral hot springs discovered during the renovation of the Castle, from which the new SPA was created. The mineral water is both the basis of the array of spa and wellness treatments available, but it also piped into the spa guest room soaking tubs. True spa enthusiasts will want to book a Spa Suites, featuring an individual treatment room with separate entrance.
The SPA features 2 outdoor and 2 indoor pools (with Jacuzzi), all featuring the mineral water from the underground hot springs of the property, plus 5 individual and 1 couples treatment room, a steam bath and sauna, and experience showers. The treatments menu is varied, and includes facial skin care, massages, body scrubs and many other enhancements using natural products.
Wine and Dine
Guests at the Castello di Velona enjoy regional food and wine, from casual to elegant. Dine at the pool bar with savory snacks and cooling cocktails, or have lunch on the panoramic terrace overlooking the west side of Val d’Orcia, or enjoy candlelight dinner in the elegant dining room, or dine under the crystal canopy of the cloister.
Brunello di Montalcino is produced from our own 32 hectare-winery, also well known also for its exquisite “prima spremitura” olive oil (olives are handpicked and pressed in carefully selected traditional methods the day of the first cold pressing).

What a fabulous place! All the staff made sure our stay was a happy and memorable one. The hotel position is extraordinary, views amazing. All our meals were delicious and beautifully presented and the tasting menu was such a treat. The wine tour was most interesting and the wine tasting very informative. We left feeling we had had an exceptional experience, and with their own wine and olive oil in the boot of the car to enjoy for the rest of our trip to Italy. Thank you to everyone who looked after us so well. We would love to come back.
Stunning views on a beautiful castle with thermal waters.
The place looks beautiful. Very tasteful. The pool with thermal water a big plus. I only give it 3 stars is because for such an upscale place, the staff was not very friendly. Their English is so bad that it often caused misunderstandings. A smile would have made a change, but it felt very unfriendly and tense. The waiter at the pool who was from Sicily was a pleasant relief, very friendly and his English okay. Compliments to him. We were a bit disappointed because we are big fans of the Chateau Relais resorts.
