6 Signs of a Great Hotel Spa

Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris
1 vote, 5.00 avg. rating (90% score)

“Hotels have been very keen on spas in recent years–whether opening their own full-blown facilities with a dozen treatment rooms and exotic therapies or simply having one or two treatment rooms available with the basic rub-downs all travelers need. But just because a hotel might be five-star, doesn’t mean its spa is. We’ll be taking a closer look at hotel spas in the coming weeks, starting with what makes for a really great hotel spa.

It’s surprising how many great hotels are let down by their spa. And while we won’t name names, we will give you six signs of a very, very, very good spa.” – Hotel Chatter

Is my diet causing acne breakouts?

skincare
4 votes, 4.75 avg. rating (90% score)

The phrase “you are what you eat” has both religious and dietary origins, dating back to as early as  biblical times — Roman Catholics believe that the bread and wine of the Eucharist are changed into the body and blood of Jesus — or the 1800s when Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, French lawyer, politician, epicure and gastronome, wrote “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es.” [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are].

The common use of the phrase today holds that to be fit and healthy you need to eat good food.

Fly In Spa Resorts

Nemacolin Resort
18 votes, 4.61 avg. rating (90% score)

Private pilots have long used the phrase “$100 Hamburger” to refer to the expense of flying one’s own plane to small airports and air strips in rural areas for a diner hamburger, which, when factoring the cost of fuel and airplane expense, was an expensive but adventurous lunch.

The phrase was coined decades ago and now flying enthusiasts are finding destinations with more to offer than a burger.

Drop down out of the clouds to these Fly In Spa Resorts which have or are near private airstrips, helipads, or have marinas with access to seaplanes

Forget the hamburger — try a fly-in massage before lifting off to your next destination.

MOR Marshmallow Bath and Body Products in time for Marshmallow Day

mor-1024x757[1]
3 votes, 5.00 avg. rating (90% score)

In Japan, Korea and Taiwan, the February 14 Valentine’s Day holiday is closely followed by White Day, celebrated on March 14.

On Valentine’s Day, the custom is for women to give gifts of chocolate to men, and not just to sweethearts, but co-workers as well!  The chocolate gifts are known as giri-choco (giri = obligation; choco = chocolate).

In order to level the playing field, a savvy marshmallow manufacturer conceived of Marshmallow Day in 1965, calling for a gesture of thanks by the men. His idea bloomed and on March 14, men who receive chocolate on Valentine’s Day return the favor and give sweet gifts — usually with marshmallow — to women. The holiday is called Marshmallow Day or White Day, as well, and gifts now include marshmallow, candy, chocolate, perfume, and lingerie.

About this City

Washington DC is the capital city of the United States.  It was formally known as the District of Columbia, but is now commonly referred to as Washington, “the District”, or simply D.C.   This district is comprised of geographic areas taken from both Maryland and Virginia.  Consequently, Washington DC can be considered a “multi-cities” area.

Washington, DC 20024

Website

Our Best Spa Day Overall was courtesy of reader tips, votes, and visits by our Secret Spa Reviewer.

This spa is exquisite.  Spacious and well-appointed, it features 8 treatment rooms, relaxation rooms, signature steam room and sauna, heated indoor Vitality Pool, Experience Showers, heated indoor lap pool, and a sundeck overlooking Washington’s Marina.

The spa’s ethos is to consult with each guest to assure a positive experience.   Whether you’re just using the steam rooms and relaxation areas, or booking more thorough spa services, including massage or skin care, your spa consultant crafts the perfect experience.

“I was a little nervous about the consultation, at first” said our Secret Spa Reviewer.  “I want an involved therapist when I get skin care or a massage, but would I be able to just enjoy the experience on my own without someone hovering, guiding me from step to step before I was ready, or eyeing me from around the corner to be certain I was in my Zen Place?

Best Aesthetics – Skin Care

Nusta Spa
1129 20th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20036
Website

Located in downtown Washington, DC, Nusta Spa offers a full range of customized spa services for women and men. Nusta Spa is the first urban day spa of its kind designed with high performance “green” interiors which are healthier, more efficient, and environmentally responsible.

Nusta is well known for being the first spa ever to achieve Gold LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.    It is committed to providing luxurious, sustainable interiors, organic product offerings, and an overall approach to healthy living.

That approach appeals to many, but we’ve heard from many readers over the years that the fear “green treatments” are less effective than traditional treatments relying on chemically driven components “in the same way a meatless entree is not as good as its protein counterpart.”   Different, healthier, but not better.

Not so!  In fact, many spa treatments utilizing natural ingredients or organic components are more effective at refreshing and wakening a complexion by feeding nutrients to starved skin which has been dulled by years of detergents or lower quality cosmetics.

Our Secret Spa Reviewer was up for the challenge, took a break from her mail-order skincare from QVC for a few months, and booked the 80 minute Radiance Treatment at Nusta Spa.  This treatment is described as a complete targeted treatment for the face, décolleté and hands. Vitamin C evens skin tone, while restoring natural luminosity and brightness to the skin.

I booked my facial appointment at Nusta after returning from a winter vacation in Hawaii.  I had a winter tan, unusual for me, and my skin was more freckled and splotchy than normal due to the hiking, swimming and sunning I’d been doing (despite using my sunscreen and saying under hats and sunshades!).   On the one hand, I could tell my skin tone was uneven and a tad dry (and sort of beginning to peel), but on the other hand, I knew this would slough off eventually and I was reluctant to lose the little bit of “bronze” I’d just acquired. I was thoroughly impressed, however, at the results.  I still had my sun-kissed bronze look, but my skin was dewy, vibrant, and even.   Best of all, I hadn’t thought about the effect on my neck and chest. The treatment targeted my decollete and for once, I had a smooth appearance from my forehead down to my bustline.  Lovely!  My skin looked better, but bronze look aside, it simply felt better than it has in years.  It was noticeably plumper and brighter, and I’m all about instant gratification!

Best Specialized Service: Brows and Wax

Nectar Skin Bar
1633 Wisconsin Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20007
Website

Our readers nominated Nectar Skin Spa in Upper Georgetown as one their favorite Day Spas in Washington DC.

Plus, our Secret Spa Reviewer noted “Best Brow Design” for the year was by Nectar’s Adrian Avila.    Adrian is an award-winning makeup artist and brow design expert.

Our reviewer noted “I had the tough assignment of letting my brows grow to what I considered an unruly length in order to get the best out of my brow design from Nectar Skin Bar.  This was also necessary after a bit of overzealous threading this year.   Adrian remarked that was actually a good thing to do priorto any brow consultation because he could better determine the trueand  natural shape and arch of my brow in order to design the best shape for my face. When I mentioned that I   prefer threading as my hair-removal technique of choice, he didn’t dissuede me, but rather, said it was it was advisable to let your brows grow and be professional shaped, and just use threading as a touch up for rogue hairs and regrowth.  ‘Maintain, but don’t shape, with threading.’   Given how wonderful my brows looked after a visit with him, I’m taking his advice.”

Nectar Skin Bar offers skin care, manicures, pedicures, and a wonderful boutique of high end, exclusive, and well regarded skin care and body care products.

Best Manicure and Pedicure

Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa
5225 Wisconsin Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20015
Website

Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa in Chevy Chase was nominated by many readers as offering among the best day spa services in the district, and we agree.

Our Secret Spa Reviewer reports “I had the best manicure and pedicure of the year at this Red Door Spa.   So much so, I’ll be jumping ship from my regular salon.  The price wasn’t significantly more than what I’ve been paying at my Chevy Chase salon salon, but oh, the difference!  Soft, comfortable furniture, no annoying chatter or overly loud music.  A warm bowl of bubbling water with marbles to massage the soles of my feet.   My feet and calves were massaged to perfection with none of what I call ‘Anger Boredom Strokes’ (where the technician alternates between rubbing so hard you think she’s angry or so absent-minded you know she’s bored), my cuticles were carefully trimmed AND examined and touched up after the first run-through.  My nails were polished, and then my legs were layered with warm towels for a rest period.   I can’t say I’ve ever had a BAD pedicure experience, but this one definitely set the bar.”

How to Host Spa Parties

Houstonian Spa Bridal Party

Admit it. You’ve attended enough bridal shower parties with corny games and cheesy prizes to last a life time. You secretly wilt at the thought of one more interminable afternoon slumped back in lumpy furniture watching the guest of honor open her gifts of tea towels, cake stands, and storage containers. You despair at the thought ingesting one more spoonful of the omnipresent marshmallow and mandarin orange gelatin salad or something with the name “Trash” in the name, followed by the “fruit punch” chaser, which looks alarmingly nuclear in origin and consists of a rapidly melting brick of pastel colored sherbet floating in ginger ale.

Fortunately for everyone involved, it’s your turn to host this gig and no one is eating Warehouse Store salads on your watch. You vow to plan something creative, fresh, tasty, and FUN, and we are here to help you do just that. (more…)

Embracing a Healthy Menopause with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

TCM and Menopause
4 votes, 5.00 avg. rating (90% score)

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are based on the concept of Yin and Yang, two forces that must be balanced in the body.  The concept resembles the western notion of homeostasis.  Yin is associated with coolness in the body, and Yang is responsible for warmth.  During menopause, Yin declines and so there is a relative excess of Yang in the body.  This manifests as hot flashes and night sweats, two complaints frequently reported by menopausal women.

Georgia Seeking to Bring Back the Soviet Era Spa Experience

Known for its pristine mountain air and curative waters, the South Caucasus country of Georgia used to be closely associated during the Soviet era with doctor-prescribed rest and relaxation.

The tumult of two decades of independence eroded the country’s reputation as a place to relax and rejuvenate. But these days, policymakers and some investors are eyeing the country’s aging spas as an opportunity to gain a share of the $2-trillion global spa-and-wellness market. (more…)

How do I handle tipping for spa treatments?

Spa 74 700 sim
4 votes, 4.75 avg. rating (90% score)

How do I know which of the day spa staff personnel to tip, and how much do I tip each of them? Spa treatments are a luxury I must budget for myself; I don’t want to go home with an empty wallet, but I don’t want to embarrass myself by slighting anyone, either. Speaking of which, do you have to carry around cash discretely and hand it out immediately after you are attended to by each staff person?  It seems so awkward, but I don’t see any standard practices.– Mary B., Fort Lauderdale, FL

Hot Springs, Thermae and Healing Waters
4 votes, 5.00 avg. rating (90% score)

Hot Springs and Mineral Springs Spas offer an on-site source of natural mineral, thermal or seawater used in hydrotherapy treatments.  The resulting benefits are the backbone of “balneotherapy”, defined as “the branch of medical science concerned with the therapeutic value of baths, especially those taken with natural mineral waters”.

Balneotherapy as a field of study is truly ancient and has been an accepted part of education in medical schools worldwide, particularly in Europe and Asia. The practice has thrived most in regions where ample water sources exist.

Tipping Spa Attendants

Jacuzzi Tub
4 votes, 4.25 avg. rating (90% score)

Q: My boyfriend and I went to a day spa to enjoy a package which included a 30 minute hot tub soak, and a side by side European massage. This was a couples package. We tipped the massage therapist for two massages.  Were we suppose to tip for the hot tub?  No one performed anything while we were in there, they just opened the door and set a timer. What would be the appropriate manner of tipping in such a situation? Thanks. — Pei H.

What Kind of Facial Should I Get?

Teen Skincare
4 votes, 4.50 avg. rating (90% score)

I am 22 and having trouble deciding on what kind of a facial treatment — my first — to get from a Day Spa on my vacation.   I have read the brochures and talked to my friends, and when I read and hear about an aromatherapy facial, that’s what I want.  Then I read about a mud mask and then that’s what I want. Then I read about a vitamin facial, and that sounds good too. My skin is pretty normal most of the time, but at other times has pretty bad acne breakouts. Help!!!” — Angel R.

thalasso.lomadelmar

Hi, I am looking for a thalassotherapy facility in the US. Could you help me to find? Thank you.”  G.B.

Some “Thalassotherapy Spas” –  mostly in the United States, describe thalassotherapy simply as “the use of sea products to detoxify, exfoliate, balance the skin’s pH, and hydrate.”   That should give you pause because true thalassotherapy is an ancient form of wellbeing; using sea water and marine based products for health and beauty.

Arkansas for the Modern Spa Enthusiast

Eureka Springs
3 votes, 5.00 avg. rating (90% score)

I love to travel to new and different destinations, and can almost always find something and someplace to recommend in out of the way places. Part of this enthusiasm for different cultures, food, architecture, activities, is the result of my being raised in one of the most culturally diverse of areas of the United States — Berkeley and San Francisco, California.

Still, one of the areas of my own country I have not visited much is the South. I can’t identify any particular reason, other than the misguided idea, perhaps, that returning to the slow pace of the South wasn’t progressive.  Nothing had changed except its association with the Clinton presidency. Then, this year, Arkansas tourism guides called.

Come tour our spa region” they asked. “We think you’ll be surprised.” (more…)
