K
Spa, Springfield, VA I really wanted to like this spa since it is
convenient to my work and my mother's home. My first visit was the result
of a gift certificate. I tried it several times and got 2 massages, a
facial and supposedly permanent hair removal services. The massages were
okay but that practitioner is no longer there. The person who gave me the facial talked
throughout the session about how the other employees were jealous of her. Awkward.
After 13 sessions of "permanent" hair removal, I gave up. It cost a small
fortune and wasn't working. I tried to resolve the issue with the owner to
no avail. I now go to another facility in Fairfax. -- Lisa P., 2007

Comfort
& Joy Wellness Spa, Fairfax, VA I have been to Comfort &
Joy quite a few times because of the consistently high quality of services
they provide. The environment is tranquil and beautifully decorated.
Recently I had an Ayurvedic massage with Amsale Yilma which was incredibly
relaxing. Afterward, I joined my sister, who had a manicure, for tea in
the comfortable reception area. We both had a wonderful experience. I
highly recommend this spa to anyone looking for a place to relax and enjoy
being pampered. -- Julia M., November 2003

Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. Health Center & Spa, Virginia Beach, VA The Spa at
Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. provides a unique menu of therapies - and the best
massage I've ever experienced. Located in a 75 year old historic landmark
building overlooking the ocean, the location is as unique and therapeutic
as the services themselves. Highly recommended. -- Anne, July 2003

Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. Health Center & Spa, Virginia Beach, VA A.R.E. is
one of the more 'unique' spas on the East Coast of the United States, with
one of the nicest staffs of professional therapists, I've yet encountered.
It's situated on the highest point of ground in Virginia Beach,
overlooking the Atlantic ocean just a few hundred feet away. This is
not a glitzy day spa, but it's very fairly priced considering the high
quality of services offered. -- Michael R., July 2003

Salon & Spa, Fairfax, VA. This salon is absolutely wonderful!
It has a large lounge area with funky modern sofas and lamps and a great
team offering refreshments and making sure my friend and I were being
taken care of at all times. They had a huge retail area with awesome
products. Not only was the salon's appearance great, so were the
services. I had a Vichy treatment and I thought I had died and gone to
heaven. Highly recommended. -- Cecilia, March 2003

Shapes Salon & Spa, Herndon,
VA I have no complaints about the quality of service I received at Shapes Salon
& Spa. I do; however, have a problem with their pricing.
A week prior to my appointment, I met with a hair stylist and the aesthetician
for a consultation. I was made aware of the charges for both services and,
prior to my appointment I assembled envelopes with full payment for both appointments
along with a 20% tip for each. I wanted to pay in cash and not have to worry
about my balance at the end of my appointment.
At the conclusion of my appointments,
I was surprised to find my facial had gone up $40 from the original price
I was quoted only one week earlier. When I asked about the price difference they told me that I
"upgraded" by getting the alpha-hydroxy treatment and a pineapple mask. The
aesthetician had taken it upon herself to cross through my original requests (on the intake form)
and checked the boxes and added the prices for the additional services, which I didn't see. I felt this was very sneaky.
During the treatment, the
only thing I even heard about an "alpha-hydroxy" treatment was that my face
was going to tingle. I was never told that the alpha-hydroxy treatment or
the mask weren't part of my quoted facial, so I didn't question what I was
receiving. I have trust that they know what they're doing. Frankly, she could
have told me I was receiving a mud mask and I wouldn't have questioned it. I
was there to relax and not worry about prices because we had already discussed
the costs in the consultation.
I also didn't care for the
Customer Service at the front desk. While I was explaining the over-charge
to the person behind the desk, she answered no fewer than 3 phone calls in
the middle of my conversation. I find the lack of personal attention terribly
rude and unprofessional. I just spent $276 and I felt like they couldn't care
less. I did speak with someone who I presume to be the manager, and
she offered do the right thing and to wave the $40 extra charge for which
I was appreciative.
My advise to anyone considering
service here: Get the quote in writing and be sure to communicate BEFORE your
appointment what your understanding is of the treatment, and to avoid any mysterious
or unknown "upgrades". Also, plan on bringing cash for a tip because they will not let
you charge a tip on your credit card. -- K.W., December 2003

Shapes, Burke, VA.
My daughter and I went to Shapes and we both had wonderful experiences.
Everything was plush. The ambience was great. Water and cookies were available
while we waited (5 minutes). The robes were plush, the treatment superb. The
services offered were plentiful for both men & women. We left feeling we received
more than what we paid for (unusual for today). We plan to return! --
