A
Step Above Spa, McKees Rock, PA
My hair is damaged due to
extensions being put in not properly by an owner of a spa. The
price was 1,500.00 and it took 14 hours. Then I returned
for a my next session. The owner removed some and put in new
extensions. The owner does not cut, instead a stylist does it (a
new girl on her first day). Some of my 18 inch extensions were now
an inch and a half (8 hours later and at a price of 900.00). I
called the salon back and returned for 4 more hours. The owner
added some more extensions. Remember the owner doesn't cut hair so
I left with long hair but no style. I went back again to get a
cut, however, the stylist was worried that she would cut it too
short. They sent me to another salon for a cut. The salon said the
owner had overlapped up to 4 extensions onto one tiny piece of my
own hair. I called the salon to have them removed but they
cancelled. I found another salon to remove them. You can purchase
the best hair but you also need an experienced technician. -- Edie

Depasquale, Danielsville, PA
I had a facial, which was like attending sales
event. My technician talked the entire time about the products I should
buy. All I wanted to do was relax and treat myself to a nice service.
Throughout, she continued by telling me I need to buy this and that.
Normally, I wouldn't mind the advice given but, I wasn't asking for any, and, it was during MY time.
The service was mediocre and the room was freezing. Maybe next time they
should concentrate on giving 100% to the facial instead of trying to sell
products at the same time. -- Leah D., 2007

The Spa at the Hotel Hershey,
Hershey, PA I've visited many spas all over the country and this is the one I hold all
others up to. It is immaculate and always fresh and inviting. I've never had
to wait beyond my appointment time although I would love to have to wait!
They have 2 "quiet rooms" and an aromatherapy room that you can wait in while
eating fruit or muffins and drinking coffee, tea and the best hot chocolate
I've ever had. The view is gorgeous and relaxing. The staff is friendly and
courteous and not overly talkative. They keep the atmosphere very relaxing.
They don't pressure you to buy a thing but if you are interested of course
they'll help. I try to visit once a month for a pedicure. I could get less
expensive services elsewhere, but no other day spa can come close to the atmosphere
that the Spa at the Hotel Hershey creates. -- Kristyn, Sept 2005

Woodhouse Day Spa, Kingston,
PA The most outstanding feature of the The Woodhouse Day Spa is the actual Woodhouse.
The sign outside is very small and easy to miss. It is a old big mansion.
Stepping inside takes you inside to a magnificent grand lobby. After checking
in and handed a robe and slippers I was directed up the spiral staircase to
the dressing room and then waited in the quiet room. My massage therapist
directed me the massage room. I was treated to a invigorating massage.
It was a smallish room with daylight shining the window which added to the
soothing environment. My only minor complaint was the music was a bit too
loud but it did not distract the overall experience. After returning to the
quiet room I was led downstairs for a pedicure. A very nice young did a good
job of pampering my feet and cutting my toenails etc. This was a pedicure
that included hot stones! The young lady told me this was the first time she
had a male pedicure client! The Woodhouse was a fine spa experience and I
look forward to returning. -- Drew, December 2004

Deerfield Spa, East Stroudsburg,
PA My trip to Deerfield was my first destination spa experience, and definitely
will not be my last. I'm not new to spa services, so I did have something
to go by.
The facility was not only
pleasant to the eye, but to the senses as well. The cuisine was delicious
to the palate as well as the eye. The accommodations were immaculate and beautiful.
From the moment you checked in you were made to feel at home!
There are many services available
at Deerfield and at very reasonable prices. While there I had a facial which
was heavenly, reflexology and a Swedish massage. All services were performed
over and beyond my expectations and never was there any pressure what so ever
to purchase spa products. I can't say enough about the staff.
Your well being is their
number one priority and never were you made to feel "inadequate" in anything
you did. Thank you Deerfield Staff for making my weekend one I'll never forget.
I can't wait for my next trip and yes; there will be many more trips! I highly
recommend the Deerfield Spa to anyone who wants to experience the best! --

Shortino & Friends,
York, PA I visited Shortino & Friends on the recommendations of co-workers. I called
the spa in advance for pricing on a foil highlight and a haircut, and I told
them I had short pixie style hair. I was told $70.00 for the foil and
$35.00 for the cut.
I arrived and was assigned
to Frank, the owner. He evaluated my hair and told me I didn't want
a foil, I wanted a color wash instead and the color wash would give me the
effect I was looking for (bolder highlights). He emphasized that he
was a color expert. He proceeded with the color wash and while yes,
the highlights were brighter, the base color was also lighter, so there was
very little color difference between the two. This made me unhappy,
so he gave me a few highlights (with a paint brush). He snipped 5 snips
in my already very short pixie hair, and said I was done.
When I went to pay my bill
it was $155.00 -- one-third more than I was quoted. I insisted on a
breakdown, and it was $55.00 for the color wash that didn't work, $50.00 for
the added highlights which were necessary to have some contrast, and $50.00
for my "haircut" which was five snips, total -- not $35.00 as originally quoted.
When I protested, I was told
Frank, as an owner, charged a higher rate. I walked out looking almost identical
to when I went in, but having spent $155.00. Let me point out that the
longest hair on my head is 1.5 inches! Although the other
staff members were very friendly, I felt taken advantage of by the owner,
and I will never return. -- Jennifer C., April 2003
Editor's Note: Spa
Index attempted, unsuccessfully, to contact the owner of Shortino & Friends
to get a response, comment, or customer service assistance for Jennifer.
Although we don't typically publish reviews which deal only with hair services
(we prefer to focus on the overall spa experience or spa services), we felt
Jennifer's customer service concerns may be valid, particularly as we were
unable to obtain even the courtesy of a return call. Jennifer reports she
is now receiving wonderful service from Arnie B's in downtown York.

put together an unbelievably talented staff who work well in the beautiful

Seven
Springs Resort, Somerset, PA
I went to the spa at Seven Springs Resort last fall for a
massage, I was basically a walk in client and they were able to
accommodate me that afternoon. The massage was greatly relaxing
and the atmosphere consistent with the rustic feel, but the
soothing music was unable to drown out the polka convention above
me. Next time I'll choose a quieter time. -- Laura M., November
